Battery LED not working

Upgraded via TinyXP. Everything works fine except when I unplugged the mains. The battery LED is lit when it was charging but when running on battery it is off. Bit disconcerting if no hard disk activity is happening since all the LEDs are off !!!! Is this a driver issue/well known (but unfindable in searching for it !!!) issue ?
