Would there be much difference in battery drain in watching a movie on an SD card verses watching it from the hard drive? I have the 3 cell battery and would be watching a movie inflight. Seems like the SD card would be the way to go. I have couple of 16 GB cards. Wondering if anyone has tried this?

i would just put it on the hard drive before going the flight.
it wouldn't drain that much battery though if you're using SD Card.

I'm guessing power usage will be similar. In both cases the Hard Disk will be running, but in one case it will mostly idle while the movie is playing, while in the other the flash card will use a bit of extra power.

However, if you want to experiment, there are some utilities that will show actual battery consumption while you work. You can test the power usage of both solutions and report back to us. I love a good science experiment...

I did some testing on this, and my estimates shows that running a movie from the SD card will give you almost an hour LESS battery run time. The hard drive won't spin down even if you don't run the movie from it, because the boot device is simply accessed too often by the OS. And the SD card-reader uses approximately 1 to 1.5 watts extra when active.

Great to know! I haven't done the math, but does 1.5 watts of increased power consumption really translate into 1 hour less battery life? That sounds like a relatively small power drain. Again, I haven't done the math.

The battery is appx 5200mAh @ 11,1Volts, which equals around 57Wh (55Wh according to notebook hardware control).
If we assume 8 hour run-time on that battery, it draws an average of 7,125 watts. If we add another 1,5 watts due to the card-reader, it adds up to 8,625 watts - which will drain the battery in 6,6 hours, which is almost an hour and a half less. I believe actual figures will be slightly closer (the hard disk will use a bit more power due to seek/reads of the movie), but I suspect you will lose considerable battery time - an hour or so. Would be cool if you tested and reported back, though :)

the best way to save power on the 751 is not to turn it on
and take it back and get a D250 its twice the Netbook and you will have money leftover to go to Lunch.

    radioman193,

Dude, calm down; you're getting annoying. We understand you don't like the 751h.

Why are you continuing to post 100% negative comments in the 11.6" forum? You now have a 10" AAO and would do much more for the users of this forum if you kept your posts on focus and on topic ... in that forum.

    radioman193,

I am currently doing my research and find your posts somewhat annoying. It is obvious how you feel about this system and that is your opinion but not everyone gets these for the same reason. I mainly bought this little guy so that I can watch my TV shows and to play my downloaded games. I have had no problems watching these TV shows or playing any of my downloaded games. This computer is great with the larger screen size and also the bigger keyboard not to mention it fits in the same carrier the my D250 did. The only thing that really bothers me is that it lacks battery life (only getting 2 hours instead of the advertised 4). It has had a couple of smaller issues but hasn't really been to bothersome. These are definately things that I can live with and having had a D250, I like this machine better! I am almost beginning to believe that you are one of those people who just isn't happy unless you can complain about things. I agree with many others on here who have suggested that you go to the D250 forum and start posting some HAPPY thoughts. ;)

You evangelize for that D250 harder than an Islamic terrorist does for Allah.

If you have a card in the SD slot but aren't reading or writing to it does it still keep the circut going and drain the battery?

Only for a minute or so. Then it goes inactive, and uses no power.
