OK, having got access to that functionality I was just having a look, once I'd entered the root password it then goes to this progress bar saying something like "REcovering system information" - it seems to take forever though! I had to stop the process.

So, how long does this take, and can I then update my Firefox and Flash once I've done this! I'm feeling proud of myself (at the IQ 65 level) for now having entered my first terminal instructions. But still rather stupid!

Under 30 seconds on my AAO (if you meant Add/Remove Software & Retrieving software information...... )
Don't know how to update Firefox or Flash in there though. After following the Top Ten tweaks to update Firefox, once it's up to V3 you can update it using Help --> Check for Updates. No idea about Flash though, sorry.

You need to be connected to the internet to use the package manager. Sometimes it takes anything from 30 secs to a minute to load and present you with the gui (graphic user interface) window.
    get flash here
    http://macles.blogspot.com/2008/10/adobe-flash-player-10-released.html

    Firefox here
    http://macles.blogspot.com/2008/07/installing-firefox-3-on-acer-aspire-one.html

use copy and paste (ctrl+c and ctrl+v respectively) once you've highlighted the line you want, and then in the terminal you must use
    ctrl+shift+v to paste it in.

    Thanks!

I am connected to the internet but the Retirieving Software information in the the package manner just seems to be hanging - or rather it seems to be going very very slowly...3-4 minutes and counting now on my AAO ZG5 8G SSD.

Bye the way you cannot update flash or firefox thru the package manager. It is useful for many other packages tho.
