Ok so don't let us panting in expectation, tell us how to make our own portable apps then...

Personally I use about 25 portable apps on my AA1 and Likewise have a desktop icon to show them on a start menu. The only apps that are not portable and located on C: are Firefox, the firewall, the antivirus and VirtualClonedrive. Another big advantage of portable apps is that when you need to reinstall or recover Windows, there is nothing else to install. So I am not going to stop using portable apps any time soon.
However, if you have the solution to a better useability and security for your fellow AA1 users, you are welcome to share...

I will have to concur with the pensuite recommendation for the netbook. It is a great way to get some of the best freeware apps all in one neat package. I have been using Lupo Pensuite more than portableapps.com. Lupo is the main software I have on my XP Aspire1. There are a few other applications that I installed directly (Skype, palringo).

There are many options for making portable programs.
    1. Autoit (free)
    2. Thinstall ($25000USD)
    3. Thinapps ($30000USD)

Thinapps is the easiest to use, but cost the most. All of the programs require you to read some books. Go to the library and spend couple days reading and you'll be able to make portable applications.

Or you can follow the guide on portable apps and it will teach you how to make "portable apps" style portable applications.

Here's the portable apps "super newb" development guide.
    http://portableapps.com/development

The only thing i would change is rar(4mb dictionary size) compression instead of UPX. They offer about the same compression, however rar is faster to decompress and require less cpu power. overall rar is more efficient.
