blank screen with mouse cursor

    i must have installed or uninstalled something important... but all i am seeing now is a black screen with no icons or anything. i can only see the mouse pointer.
    i tried with the recovery dvd to make the usb stick (using my other laptop) but it does not proceed and keeps blinking num and caps lock lights...
    then i made a ISO image of recovery dvd using window based programs and then using unetbootin-windows-307.exe tried to create the usb bootable.
    but when i boot the AAO with this usb it goes upto the progress bar and keeps blinking caps lock light!
    my questions:
    1. is it possible to boot up AAO in something like safe mode or command line mode?
    2. do i have to create the bootable USB using linpus linux??
    3. what other way to jump start my AAO ??
