    Re: blind flashing truely explained in full for the aspire o

    By coincidence, I had my second BIOS flash experience this week. I had the Acer on overnight standby mode, and in the morning got a black screen (though it clearly was activating the unit and HDD.) It's the second time using the "Maccles" flashing method helped a black screen to reboot for me. Weirdly this process never resulted in actually replacing my 3301 BIOS version with the 3310 BIOS, even though that's what I put on the USB drive. What happens is that the process somehow triggers the old BIOS to start working again.

    Here are my step by step notes, cribbed from various other posts and internet sources (with apologies to the brighter minds who wrote them):

    "Acer Aspire One BIOS Recovery

    The AA1 has a built-in BIOS recovery routine, making it possible to flash the BIOS even if the system doesn't boot anymore. It's only meant for emergencies and may void your warranty, so use at your own risk.

    Follow every step carefully!

    First format an USB stick with FAT.

    Download the latest BIOS, and put both FLASHIT.EXE and the BIOS file in the root directory of the stick.

    Rename the BIOS file to zg5ia32.fd, that's important. Do not remove the USB stick. {Possible FLASIT.EXE instead?}

    Turn the AA1 off, make sure both battery and AC adapter are connected.

    Press Fn+Esc, keep it pressed and press the power button to turn the AA1 on.

    Release Fn+Esc after a few seconds, the power button will be blinking.

    Press the power button once.

    The AA1 will now initiate the BIOS flash, do not interrupt it under any circumstances.

    After a while the power button will stop blinking, and the AA1 will reboot shortly after. Wait patiently.

    The BIOS has been flashed and all settings reset to default."

    If for some reason you made a mistake during the procedure and it doesn't reboot by itself wait 5 minutes before turning it off, just to be safe that it isn't still flashing the BIOS.

    If BIOS flash doesn`t help, probably the problem is not the BIOS. Try one of these steps (info from aspire one service manual).

    1. Make sure that the internal display is selected. On this notebook model, switching between the internal display and the external display is done by pressing Fn+F5. Reference Product pages for specific model procedures.
    2. Make sure the computer has power by checking at least one of the following occurs:
    * Fans start up
    * Status LEDs light up
    3. Drain any stored power by removing the power cable and battery and holding down the power button for 10 seconds. Reconnect the power and reboot the computer.
    4. Connect an external monitor to the computer and switch between the internal display and the external display is by pressing Fn+F5 (on this model).
    5. Disconnect power and all external devices including port replicators or docking stations. Remove any memory cards and CD/DVD discs. Restart the computer.
    If the computer boots correctly, add the devices one by one until the failure point is discovered.
    6. Reseat the memory modules (RAM). Have to take the Acer apart. Do it at your own risk.
    7. Remove / replace the drives.

    Ok I have had this problem and I am trying to format my USB Flash drive to FAT, yet i am having no luck. I have tried HP USB Drive Storage Tool, no option for FAT. The only option i have is FAT32, exFAT, and NTFC. I tried exFAT and it didnt work. I am going to try FAT32 and see if it works i hope so. Its not my AAO its my mothers now so i am hoping it will work this time! If not does anyone have any idea about trying to format in FAT in Win7?

    This isn't working for me, can anyone help?

    My first board hung during a BIOS update. Completely dead after that. Can boot into crisis disk with flashing LED but refused to read any of the flash drives I have, no read/write activity at all. Even when it was working, it didn't do anything, it just rebooted with the exact same version number.

    Second one was one I picked up for a tenner needing a BIOS flash (black screen of death) hoping I could get it working for cheaps. Alas, same problem, it just straight up isn't even trying to read the drives, despite flashing LEDs.

    I can assure you I have followed the guide correctly, many a time. Any ideas? :/

    Cheers
