    Hi,

I have an aspire one a100L (z5g model), 1 gig RAM, 16 GB SSD, 3G built-in. I have the original Linpus Lite installation.

I implemented the noisy fan fix as on this page http://n00.be/archives/758/

This was a big mistake!!! When I rebooted I only got a blank screen, with the fan wizzing very loud for a bit then stopping.

Caps lock keys still work, but nothing else (I tried alt+f2 but no console). At least I could shut down by hitting power button though.

This got me worried so I booted up my live USB install of Ubunto and found /etc/rc.local on the SSD. I used sudo vi /etc/rc.local and undid the line I was told to add.

However I still can't boot into Linpus. Still get the black screen, but the fan is back to normal. But even worse now, the only way I can shut down is to take the battery out.

    Any help is much appreciated!

    Regards,
    Gary.

I suspect that rc.local isn't correct. Can you post it for us?

    Thanks

Sure -- after I removed the /usr/local/bin/acerfand line in vi, it now looks like this

    #!/bin/sh
    #
    # Some comments
    # Some comments
    # Some comments

    touch /var/lock/subsys/local
    setpci -d 197b:2381 AE=47

I think there is also a blank line at the end of the file.
Just to let you know i said acer aspire one a100 in original post -- I meant a110.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Gary.

    Looks like rc.local is fine.

Ok, now for a "desk analysis" of what is going on. The X server (graphics isn't starting). The fan control daemon WAS starting (and stopped the fan after booting -- as it is supposed to). There will be a log file in /etc/log/Xorg.0.log that I would look at. I would like to have a look at that file.

Now, my working hypothesis was that rc.local did not exit -- this would prevent the X server from being started, and would have caused the rest of the problems... but I don't think so. The fan daemon wouldn't have caused these problems, either. The power switch works in two ways - a single press is communicated to the running OS via dpmi, which then shuts down. The second way is to hold the switch down for 5 seconds which FORCES an immediate power off.

So - we want to eliminate hardware problems now. Try powering off by holding the power switch. IF THIS DOESN'T WORK THE UNIT IS DEFECTIVE. If this does work, we can proceed.

Now, it may have been that the normal power-on fsck (disk check) was interrupted, and the disk is somewhat "bad". So, the next step is to boot from USB, and issue: "sudo fsck /dev/sda1" command (or whatever your other Linux uses to be root). Then, check /dev/sda1 directory "lost+found". If there are any files in "lost+found", these may have been vital to your Acer booting. Remedial action is then to re-install. If not, we still have a chance.

    So, to recap:

    post the results of:

    1-

    ls -l /var/log/Xorg.0.log
    cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

    2-

(I want the last modification date of the Xorg log file as well).

Try the "hold the power switch down to force power off".

    3-

Try the fsck command (If you don't feel comfortable, don't do this step yet).

And we'll go from there .

    Fweigel,

Thanks for helping me -- I really appreciate it.

I have tried to answer your questions below.

I have been doing more digging of my own and I did notice that a file called /root/.gconfd/saved_state was modified around the time the issues started occuring. The contents of this file look "strange". I wonder if this is getting in the way of the start up? I have added the contents of it at the bottom of this post.

    Regards,
    Gary.

Now, it looks like the X server is actually starting! However, the desktop environment is not coming up. But, all of your hardware seems ok (well, display, keyboard, touchpad, anyway).

So, it seems that a restore (reload) would work. I am thinking of alternatives... but I have some house repairs to attend.

Will get back to this tomorrow.

    fweigel.

    Fweigel,

There is the line in the Xorg logfile as follows

    Code:
(EE) Unable to open /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:02.0/enable. Be afraid.
The whole /sys folder is empty. Should there be some content?

I am wondering if when I ran acerfand the first time, the uncontrolled shutdown it caused somehow corrupted the solid state drive. I'd like to try running the fsck but what does it do and what are the risks?

    Regards,
    Gary.

Yes, the X server is working -- but the HAL layer isn't, for some weird reason. And that is our current line (this would be much quicker if I had the machine in front of me, but it's probably more frustrating for you -- sorry).

The /sys directory SHOULD be completely empty -- if it hasn't been mounted!

In a terminal, type "mount". The output should be along the lines of:

    /dev/sda1 on / type ext2 (rw)
none on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620)
none on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)
none on /sys type sysfs (rw)
none on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw,devgid=502,devmode=664)
none on /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc type binfmt_misc (rw)
none on /mnt/home type aufs (rw,si=df3ff180,xino=/home/user/.aufs.xino,create=mfs,dirs=/home/user=rw)

Of import is the line "none on /sys type sysfs (rw)". That probably doesn't appear in yours!? Then, check /etc/fstab There should be a line in there

    none /sys sysfs defaults 0 0

This line causes mounting of /sys. If that line IS there, but /sys isn't mounted, try "sudo mount /sys". That shouldn't work, though... The implication is that a kernel module has been erased or corrupted.

And, since it is (likely) one of the kernel modules, send me the result of typing the command "lsmod".

    Thanks.

    Fweigel,

I have a friend at work who is a Linux guru and has been helping me out as well.

He did a fsck on the drive for me over lunch, and my SSD was quite sick. Anyway he let it repair itself, but I found out later that it couldn't fully recover all the broken files.

Essentially I could boot up to the GUI but the panel was screwy (e.g. AC power symbol when running on battery) and the keyboard wouldn't work. Also got messages saying some network connection settings had been lost, and it wouldn't power down without the 5 sec method.

So I have decided to do a fresh install and will probably use the ext3 filesystem in case a similar thing happens in the future.

Thanks for you help though -- it is very useful to have such an active forum when you're just starting out in Linux, and I learned a lot from it!

Using ext3 will wear your SSD a bit faster... ext2 is actually not too bad (except, well, sometimes...)

For SSD, I recommend ext2, but with a full backup. Your friend can help you install "tar"; I have a set of instructions on how to do a backup (check my posts).

I have been using ext2 with Linpus for almost a year (but I do have my backups, just in case).
