If you are just looking for cheap, and not necessairly portable, these guys have a wide selection of refurb dvd drives dirt cheap. I bought mine for $23 and it works fine!

I'm a newbie to the Acer One....just got it today! If i buy the above mentioned product, will I be able totake all programs on cd and load them onto the hard drive? Also, I use some dvd's for teaching CPR, would I be able to install those as well? Thanks for any input.

I'm also using the Samsung SE-S084B/RSBN, which I picked up for $80 CAD. I think it's a great portable writer to go with the Aspire One. The writer is powered by two USB slots with no option to directly power the drive from an AC source. And I can personally confirm the drive can withstand a 1 meter drop onto concrete (though I wouldn't recommend trying that at home  ).

I also bought a Samsung SE-S084B/RSBN and I too am happy with it.

I noted one detail that others may find useful, when booting from an optical disk it does not always work from a cold start, but I have had consistent success if I first boot to the hard drive, connect the optical drive and then restart. So far it has always booted by from the optical disk when that was my selection.

Just want to make certain before I purchase the DVD drive ...

Will my Acer Aspire One, while running off its battery I have a larger capacity, 6-hour battery), be able to power through the 2 USB ports a Samsung SE-S084B/RSBN DVD drive to permit me to watch a movie?

    Thanks.
