    Merry Christmas
the file in my downloads folder is a .tar.gz file - is that not a zipped file? I don't really know what an rpm file is.
I thought I had cracked it last night with
    gunzip -c install_flash_player_11_linux.i386.tar.gz | tar xvf -
which did not produce an error message and produced several lines of text after I hit enter.
Still no update to the flash player though - I suspect there is another command I need to input after that last step?
    cheers
    Mike

    Merry Christmas, Mike
You've uncompressed flash_player_11_linux.i386.tar.gz, but haven't installed anything yet. To install:
    Code:
    sudo mv libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

RockDoctor, it worked! I knew I was close but also knew I would never get there without help from someone with (significantly) greater knowledge than me.
Thanks so much, I've had a good Christmas day and getting this sorted is the icing on the cake :D
I hope your day has been good too.
I'm in Edinburgh so can't offer to buy you a beer, but thanks again, very much, for your help.
    Cheers
    Mike
