cannot connect to gmail or facebook

I've been enjoying my aspire one with windows xp for about a month. suddenly gmal and facebook won't connect and when I run windows diagnostics I get a message to check firewall settings for http, https,and ftg.
I uninstalled the trial of macafee and installed norton 360 and turned off the windows firewall but that didn't help.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

there are very many internet sites, and you say you have lost access to just two. Maybe those two are the ones you most often use, sure, but they are some of the heaviest sites around. You've gone a little to extremes in your repair work there, when you should test other lighter websites, google search, news sites, etc.

You also don't mention the browser you are using. This is pretty critical if you think about it. Actually alot of people are using two types of browsers nowadays: explorer plus firefox, or firefox plus chrome or explorer plus chrome or opera plus firefox, etc etc. Then they try out a number of sites in order to troubleshoot.

It could also be a password thing, or that you clicked browse offline by mistake. In fact, there is quite a wide range of possibilities, and you need to narrow them down.

Just some ideas, sorry couldn't give exact answer.
