No problem connecting to my WLAN for browser, but when trying to retrieve emails get "server unreachable" despite using the same settings which work fine with Windows. Thought I might be better off using Thunderbird, but when trying "Add/remove software" cannot get software information, only "unable to retrieve software information. This could be caused by not having a network connection available". Looks like a selective firewall, but all Windows machines have no such problems. Any ideas. Am using a DLink G604T wireless router/modem.

Can you see _anything_ on the Internet? E.g., web browser pointed at google.com? If not, then it's not specifically an e-mail problem, I guess.

The Linpus version of the One comes without any firewall. Maybe your router discriminates based on MAC adress ?

I don't mean any disrespect, but are you absolutely sure that the e-mail settings (hostname, port number, protocol) are all correct? What mail service do you use? The hostnames and port numbers you need for a mail client are quite likely to be different from the ones you use for a web-mail interface (although they aren't always different).

I am sure all info is correct. Using 1and1 mail server but also have same problems with onetel and f2s. Managed to connect on a commercial wifi hotspot so am convinced it must be my router. Like the sound of MAC address discrimination, but how do I check this?

I would think that it's unlikely to MAC address if you can connect to web sites. It's not impossible, but I'd be very surprised. I would suggest you get the terminal open, and try

    ping [hostname]

where `hostname' is your provider's POP/IMAP server (not web server) to check that there a basic route between your box and the provider.

What mail client software are you using? Do you have problems sending or receiving, or both? Have you set your mail client to use POP3 protocol on port 110? Does the client appear to fail completely to get a connection, or does it fail in some other way (e.g., during authentication)?

using pop.1and1.co.uk. Problems both sending and receiving. Yes, set to POP3 and port 110. When I try to connect I get "server unreachable".
