Cheers for that-will give it a whirl later. I'm just installing XP, I'm at 95% of 'setup is formatting'. Hopefully if this works (and knowing me it won't!) then I'll just be able to install software as normal.

OK, I am trying to load Microsoft Autoroute 2006 onto my new Aspire One netbook (running windows xp). I read the instructions in this thread --and I'm afraid they meant almost nothing to me!
I tried copying the two discs onto a USB drive, and installing from there, however, when the instructions on the screen said to install the run disc, I opened the files from the thumb drive, double clicked and nothing happened.
I have Nero on my lenovo laptop and desktop, but don't understand what to do with it in terms of using it to copy a program from one computer to another.
I would be grateful if someone could explain (words on one syllable aren't necessary, but computer jargon flummoxes me), in fairly simple terms, how I can do this.
    Thanks.
PS I also used the search function in this forum, and read all 516 posts that came up, and was not much further ahead. I do not have a network set up.

You can also mount ISO files directly in Windows using a free utility from Microsoft called "Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel."

I believe the latest XP version of this utility is 2.0.11.

I just got my Aspire One, but I had luck using my desktops CD/DVD Drive via the network. I just set up a basic network, and added my Hard drive and CD Drive from my Desktop as shared items. Using my wifi, I can connect the AAO to the network and access these drives. I successfully installed Office 2007 via this method (I have a purchased CD from Microsoft).

I doubt I could watch a DVD this way, and it certently wouldnt work for installing WIndows, but for program installs it works well, albeit a bit slow.

I've found the following method to work with CDs and DVDs that you do not need to boot from. For example, this technique will not work for copying an XP installation CD to a SD disk and then trying to install XP to another PC by booting off of the SD disk. I have successfully used this technique to copy my Office 2003 CD and my OneCare CD to an SD disk. Obviously, the SD (or other removable media) has to have sufficient capacity and you need access to a computer with a CD/DVD drive and a media reader.

Assume the Office 2003 CD is in drive D: and the SD disk is in drive E.

Go to a command (DOS) prompt and type:

    xcopy d:\*.* e: /h /s

I then put the SD disk in my AAO and ran the setup executable to install Office.

Hi! New to the forum! Great site!

I tried this with a movie as I thought it would be great not to have to fool with an external DVD player on plane trips. But, won't work due to encryption! Kinda thought this might happen. :x Darn! Does this work with games?

There are.. quite a few programs out there that allow you to remove the encryption and copy protection schemes from DVDs. If it is legal in your country to make backups of DVDs you own you could e.g. look at the shareware program DVDFab.

Thanks Grim! I'll look into this! I guess copying the DVD removes the encryption, then the files can be converted to iso? (Probably illegal in the US! )

Roughly yes. A simple copy action will not work on most DVDs since the producers have devised all kinds of ways to prevent just that (deliberately adding flaws to the table of contents, deliberately adding bad sectors etc. etc) - but as said, there are quite a few programs designed to deal with that. Most of those can indeed also make .iso files. Or alternatively compress the main movie into a much smaller .avi (but that takes a lot more time, reduces the quality and removes all the nifty DVD features).

Of course, if you are *allowed* to use those programs depends on our local laws. Rights to backup legally owned media for personal use are your best bet. If you are not allowed, I of course must advice you not to do it, being a law abiding citizen and all ;)

I use the following software/Hardware to access data that resides on CD/DVD.

I bought an empty full size USB-2 (IDE internal interface) self powered case and installed one of my DVD burners that I had residing in one of my Desktops. Being full size makes it a little heavier and bulkier to transport but give me the flexability of moving it between PC's as I need to. What they don't tell you about the slim line USB-2 devices is that they chew up 2 USB-2 ports so as to get enough power to drive them and your battery time will surely suffer. Some Slim extenal DVD's may come with an external power source. My idea is to prep your Lappy at home before you go on that trip. If you prefer Sata I am sure there are cases with that in mind. When your Burner starts giving you problems (creating coasters) you just go out an purchase another full size inexpensive burner and swap it in. You do not have to open any pc to replace. One other point - when you took out that Burner it freed up another bay that can be used for a harddrive now. If you are like me I have accumilated more drives than bays over time as the prices came down and the capacities went up. If the Ext USB-2 cases are cheap enough you can even place your unused HDD drives in them. (Just a thought). These don't tend to be as portable as the 2.5 ext HDD's as they can be more suseptable to damge due to mobility but if just left connected to that USB-2 Hub on your desktop you can use it to back-up your data.

Software that allows you to migrate data to your Harddrive.

I use ANYDVD by Slysoft. (purchase required and includes lifetime updates). SlySoft has many other products as well.
Anydvd can be used to migrate DVD data to your HDD or allow you to use an alternate program to do the job. ANYDVD will full fill virtually anything that the source DVD needs in order to access it. It will fake the proper region code if required without you committing to the change via the firmware of your device. It will also negate any copy protections that may exist.

With AnyDVD up and running I can use my (Free) DVDShrink Ver 3.52 to rip the whole DVD or just the Movie itself to my harddrive. AnyDVD analyes the DVD before allowing DVDShrink access to it. With the size of HDD's now a days you can bring along quite a bit of entertaiment. The nice thing about viewing a movie on your PC is the fact that it doesn't matter if it is PAL or NTSC. Most UK standalone DVD players will play both but here in North America we are limited to NTSC unless you purchase a specially ordered Region Free/Multi-format converter Player. A PC video doesn't care.

I use to use DVDDecrypt (free as well) and then run the output through Shrink but now I use AnyDVD + Shrink and this saves me a step.

Virtual CD Ver 8 work simillar to ISODVD but you have to purchase it. It stores your virtual CD/DVD's each in their own folder and allows you to install software via the Install wizard just as if you had a DVD drive. This allows me to archive several compaion disk that came with some of my PC accessories onto one DVD as well as my HDD. When installing software and the Install Wizard asks for the 2nd disk you just drag the 2nd disk image and drop it on the virtual Drive and respond "OK" to the wizard's message window and off it goes just as if you had physically inserted the 2nd disk into a real disk drive. Also with a copy of the drivers on your harddrive I can satisfy a system request for a mising driver when connecting USB-2 devices.

The AAO D250 firmware allows accessing bootable CD/DVD's from usb-2 attached devices

This may have been covered but I share my desktop's dvd drive with my netbooks over my network.

Hi I'm new and totally  Got acer aspire one happy 2wks ago and tried to connect external cd/dvd drive but have a problem with running cd.my computer shows cd/dvd device but wont let it run (once but only once did open folder ,showed content but didn't open them). It doesn't play dvd movies (I know I my need some software to do it, but shouldn't windows media player work?). It doesn't even see cd with some software like antivirus, nero etc. I know that device is working properly because my husband got HP mini netbook and works perfectly without anything extra (he didn't have to install anything),we both got windows7 home edition. please if you know what can I do with it.would be very great full.

there is no need to downloading deamon tool nero itself(or any other program used for making images) has nero image drive(or image mounting option) so installing deamon tool is waste of time :ugeek:
