    Hi all,

Once my AAO arrives, I'm planning on installing a (legit) copy of XP I have that's not being used on anything at the mo. The Linux version saved me £30.

So I was wondering, will it just be a case of hooking up an external DVD drive, setting the AAO to read from that on boot-up. Then removing partitions, formatting and finally installing XP?

Will I need to download a tonne of drivers etc before doing that?

    I'm a bit :? and don't wanna break it on day 1 !!!

    TIA

That's about it. Get the drivers now from Acer's site. I'm assuming you have the HDD version of the AOO coming?

Yes, my AAO (120GB HDD) arrived this morning.

Unfortunetely it doesn't look like the case to make my old DVD drive, external, will arrive today.

So I dl the drivers i'll need. Where would I put them? i.e. I'll format the AAO, so anything on it will be deleted. Will I still be able to use it once XP installed to get the correct drivers on? Hope you understand what I mean!! lol

put them on removable storage. I keep mine on USB key. I have an 8GB USB key that has my Windows XP installation files, along with all my programs that I need to install and drivers for the OS.

    Well good start!!!

AAO arrived, Booted up ok. Setup the Network connection no probs. Then it did the update, rebooted to the home screen no probs. Only prob was I couldn't get the wireless to switch on again using the switch. And when I clicked on network connections it wouldn't open.

Now when I reboot I just get a black screen, occassionally it says "error 16", but normally just a flashing "_" in the top left corner.

Now I'm creating a Linux recovery disk to try and get it working again.

Well the Linux recovery disk got to 100%, then a message popped up saying Error, unable to open program. :?

    On boot up the screen then came up with L 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 and so on!!!

    Oh dear I thought.

Luckily there was a ring on the doorbell, my new case for an old internal DVD drive had arrived.

    Hooked it up, installed XP!

    Running a treat!!! :D

    Hi mate,

I am just about to borrow an external DVD drive to put XP onto my aspire one (the 120gb version).

I, however am a bit of a beginner. My friends (and IT section at work) say I need to partition the hard drive and use that portion for xp. This would suit me down to the ground, being able to choose on boot up which system to use, because I love Linux, but need Windows to run a certain program for work, which will only run on windows.

I'd really appreciate it if you could help me through this, or know of any sites where you found the info....

    Cheers,
    Russ

As a matter of interest, how much space does a basic XP install take. If I installed XP onto my 16G SSD, would there be any room left over for programs?

I am trying to install XP from an external CD rom drive, it boots to the blue windows setup screen (sometimes) runs through loads of checks then blue screen errors on me, occasionally i get a txtsetup.sif is missing error as well.

What do i have to do to the machine to prepare it for an XP install? i thought this would be really easy, lol

In answer to your question sjc, a basic installation of xp varies but its around 3-4GB for a clean install, which will leave you at least 10-12gb left for programs and whatnot. Although id suggest you got an sd card to expand the system storage as that will disappear rather fast. :ugeek:

    Hi Everybody!

My ONE arrives tomorrow (120gb hard drive, 1gb ram, Linpus).
I am also considering installing xp via a usb cd-rom.

At first I thought that a dual boot would be best, however perhaps using virtual box would be better?
If so, do I install xp first and then reload Linpus via the recovery disc?

    Many Thanks for any replies!
