I don't have a lot of money to spend right now. My computer crashed, and I need something better than an iPod to get me thru. Which is my better alternative: a cheap tablet or a cheap tablet? By cheap, I'm referring the the cheapest!

If you computer has crashed, what is the problem with it. usually that refers to a software error and the cheapest option is to rebuild the operating system and put the software back on. Usually this is on a hidden partition and is automated after you set it going and confirm you will loose your data and settings (sometimes you can keep the data but..) this generally costs nothing but your time.

So what is the problem with the computer?

Since it wasn't the os, I was told it was probably the mother board or the hard drive. But he hasn't looked at it himself. If it happened to me and my mother in law back to back, I have no clue at all. We are both on the same wifi, but I don't even know if its possible to be the same issue.

So do you still have the machine and what exactly was the problem? If you are interested in fixing it that is. Fixing is often the cheapest option, but I always hate my 'fellow' IT people when they say, new machine to someone and only give a vague diagnosis. I have seen people who have become come friends of mine be told £700 to fix the problem and retrieve the guy's work data when all the problem was was that the screen cable needed reseating. The guy concerned was told by a good friend of mine to let me look at it for him, he came by and I fixed the machine infront of him after showing him that it worked fine on an external screen (it was a laptop). It was a 10 minute job for me as an IT Engineer.

I just can't help having bad feelings about what is happening with you.

Of course if you just want a new machine, please say so and also say exactly what you need it for. Tablets are great for browsing the internet, but if you have to write a report or dissertation on one you will curse the day you got it.

It needs windows installed, but every time I try, half way through I get an error message and it turns itself off. I can't tell you what kind it is or anything. My husband built it so he should know. I'll find out when he gets home. Thank you !

I would say the tablet. I'm in the same spot as you and I can't really spend a ton of money on a new laptop. I thought about just getting a cheap laptop, but I've been told that they are a waste of money. I would just say to go with a tablet. I'm sure that you would be able to find something that is pretty cheap. I have been using my parents Mac desktop and it's been working. But I understand you not wanting to use the iPod.

I would go for a cheap notebook since it has the keyboard for typing purpose unless you are really comfortable using the tablet build in on screen keyboard as I have on my iPad. Not sure how much you are willing to spend, but I am sure you will find something in your price range. Have you check eBay or Craigslist?
