Hi I'm thinking of getting an AA1, but am a little confussed about whether it is capable of taking a 3g simm card and which speed it runs at. If anyone can clarify what it'll do I'd be very grateful.
    thanks

No, the current models are not 3G-capable.
There will be some models sometime in the future that will have the internal HS(D/U)PA modem, mut they are not available yet.
As to will they be sold everywhere or just in co-operation with telecom providers is another story...

3G, that's not in use in the United States, at least not widely, right?

Well, 3G itself is nothing more than "3rd generation" as in mobile technology...

Do a little search on Wikipedia about 3G, CDMA, UMTS and so on and things will clarify a lot :geek:

Got one in the end anyway, was told in the shop it wasn't 3G but there is a slot that has been taped over behind the battery. Does this mean it could possibly be upgraded in the future?

You probably won't be able to upgrade these models, as they haven't got the PCI-x pins on the motherboard under the little hatch. But a future model will come equipped with the 3G modem (Probably for free, on a contract!)

I've successfully got a T-Mobile web'n'walk usb modem working on an old desktop with Xubuntu by following this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php? ... 3g+dongles. The method I followed uses the latest version of Network Manager 0.7 from this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=797059

It was very straight forward in Xubuntu. Having installed the updated Network Manager, all I did was plug in the usb modem and all worked beautifully. :D

Looks like the answer is to install Xubuntu or Ubuntu if you want 3G.

That version of NetworkManager can also be installed on the One, so changing the whole OS shouldn't be necessary.

    Hi,

I've been looking into this too & on http://www.acer.com/aspireone/ in the FAQ section under 'hardware' it says:

"Q: On the Aspire One 3G connectivity is stated as an 'optional' / 'embedded' feature - how can it be upgraded from a 'non'-3G configuration at a later stage?
A: Embedded 3G is a manufacturing design. Upgrading to 3G from a "non-3G" model is possible via an external USB 3G module with appropriate Linux-compatible driver and connection application support that has been adequately tested with operating system."

Also Acer Direct are currently recommending four different 3G dongles as "Essential Accessories" for the A150L-120GB, 1GB. There's no direct link as they only appear at checkout but their product codes are: E160, 18012, 18013, 18014. Has any one tried any of these on these on the XP version yet?

Could I use the method from this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=797059 to install the latest version of Network Manager 0.7 on the original operating system on the acer? If not, how can it be done?
