    Hello,

Before I decide to get one of these netbooks, I have a few questions about connecting it to the internet.

Mobile phones don’t work here so I’m not convinced that a wireless or wifi connection will either, so I’m really only concerned about wired connectivity.

I have a telephone extension cord in my bedroom from when I last had a computer, which has a grey cord attached which plugged into the back of my old computer (second-hand desktop, pay as you go dial up internet.)

What do I need to do with these cables to get broadband on the netbook?
Do I need a modem, or is this built in to the netbook?
Do I need a router thing?
How much do these items cost?

We have a family desktop which has broadband – can I connect to this service so we don’t end up with two broadband bills to pay?

Is there anything else I should know?

I don’t really understand specification lists, so I apologise if this information is apparent in the product description.

    Many thanks for your help.

The Acer does NOT come with a built-in modem. So, if you want dial-up service, you will have to get an external modem.

You can easily connect with a laptop with built-in WiFi almost anywhere in your home if you add a wireless router (which should cost around $50 for an average one). The Acer One comes with built-in WiFi as do almost all laptops sold today. And no, you will not have to pay for a second broadband service.

When broadband first started, the services were making some NOISE about charging for extra computers, but no one paid any attention to that and the services quickly ended that revenue stream.

You can share your broadband connection with your desktop PC via a wireless router.

If your broadband connection is ADSL then a wireless router incorporating an ADSL modem would make sense. The Netgear DG834G is an inexpensive and very reliable wireless router.

Any ADSL Wireless router should work. Some work better than others, on both the ADSL side and the wireless side. There are many to choose from and prices vary considerably so do some price research and shop around.

Based on personal experience I would recommend one of the NetGear DG834 models, these have proven to be the most reliable and offer the best performance on my broadband connection (O2 ADSL2+).

    Thanks for your help. :D

Unfortunately, it seems all this might be getting a bit expensive. :( Especially when you include the price of an external optical drive.

    Hi Ranger5

    If you are still looking for a wired/wireless router look on Amazon for the following;

Belkin Micradigital Wireless g 802.11g ADSL Modem and Router F5D7630uk4A

Works great with my PC via ethernet and Aspire on wireless. Buy a new one from UK Surplus Central for £20.00 delivered and if my memory serves me right it was delivered within 2 days of ordering.

Sounds like you may be in the UK with pricing in pounds. I just got connected with DSL and my US company (Qwest) gave me a DSL modem that is ALSO a wireless router. Works great. You might ask you DSL provider if they have any modems with a wireless router built into the modem.
