Before I buy want to be sure I can connect to dialup.

    1) We have dialup at home. I need a USB modem. I just plug in the telephone cord to the USB modem and am ready to go?

    2) Kids have DSL through their cable. Does that work with the USB modem as well? Same end for plugging in?

    3) A patient brought the little Acer in (first I'd seen) and showed me a slot on the side that looked an awful lot like a telephone hookup. What was that for?

Don't always trust the clerks in the stores to know for sure so would like to hear from someone "in the know". Thanks

    1) download and install the drivers too, and you should be good to go.
    2) if the DSL connection is thru their cable, then you need to plug the cable in the RJ45 connector on the left side of the AAO. You dont need the dial-up modem because its not a dial-up connection. The kids probably have their own cable modem..
    3) I believe you are talking about the Rj45 connector on the left side. It is used to connect to LAN and WAN (LAN is local area network, WAN is Wide are network, as in the web). It is slightly smalled then a RJ11 (the telephone connector that is) but you may not notice that..

Thanks that helps. Glad this is a Beginners section. Just a few more questions...

    1) Do I download drivers on another machine and move to the mini?
    2)What's a AAO?
3)Is LAN like a office network and WAN like the internet? Is this something I am not likely to use?

    Any help appreciated!

    1. No. The drivers will come already installed on the AAO for the hardware it uses.

    2. AAO = Acer Aspire One

    3. LAN = local area network; WAN = wide area network (Internet)

    Cheers.

    1) So the AAO has the drivers already installed for the USB/modem thing.

    Thanks!

you download it from another computer in form of a file (being executable or compressed).
if the file is executable, just copy to the AAO and execute there, it will store itself in the right location.
if the file is a compressed archive (zip, rar..) you will need to unpack it (right click menu on the file) before executing it on the AAO.
