I've had problems with Firefox3 that won't save settings and always starts with Firefox homepage. I think I have traced the problem to some corrupted files in /home/user/.mozilla/firefox/im3gth45.default
Listing the files in the directory gives the following result...
    [user@localhost im3gth45.default]$ ls -al | grep ?
ls: cannot access prefs.js: Input/output error
ls: cannot access metrics-config.xml: Input/output error
ls: cannot access sessionstore.js: Input/output error
    -????????? ? ? ? ? ? metrics-config.xml
    -????????? ? ? ? ? ? prefs.js
    -????????? ? ? ? ? ? sessionstore.js

I'm fairly new to this linpus thing - the files can't be moved or renamed as I just get input/output errors.
    Any help will be appreciated.

I had the same problem and since I had just installed a new version of NoScript I blamed it. I asked on the NoScript Forum and found it was not the fault of NoScript but a corrupt Profile.
I was given a link to this Thread @
    http://forums.informaction.com/viewtopi ... t=161#p494

There is an explanation and another link to a procedure for changing your Profile but this was all too much for me so I just:

    • Backed up my Bookmarks
Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks > Import and Backup
    • Un-installed FireFox (I used Revo UnInstaller but this is probably not necessary)
    • Restarted my AAO
    • Re-installed FireFox
    • Imported my Bookmarks back into FireFox (I lost my Tags)
Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks > Import and Backup
    • Re-Installed my FireFox Addons and theme etc

That was over 2 months ago and all has been good since then :)

All the best, woz of oz

Thanks for the pointers. I followed the link about profiles and went into the profile manager (terminal: ff3 -profilemanager) and found the user profile that I think I set up when I installed firefox3 as well as the active default profile. I deleted the default profile, restarted firefox and found that everything works properly again :D Fairly painless and all done in a couple of minutes so thanks++ for your input.
I am now left with a few seriously broken files that linpus refuses to remove (input/output error when I run rm on them). I can't see how to force fsck to run at bootup and sort out this mess. Any hints?

Sorry for the late reply. I have only used Windows so I know nothing ;)

Probably best to search and if necessary ask in the Linux section.
    Good luck :)

    To force fsck

Wait for the system to be idle (no disk light activity)

HOLD the power switch down for 4-5 seconds until the power goes off.

    Press power switch, turn on.

Wait -- the fsck should trigger and you should be at a "blue screen". For SSD, it will not be too long, but for 120/160GB hard disk version it will take 10 to 20 minutes.
