    Hey,

I got a new Aspire one on thursday and it has been running fine so far. However, just now a blue screen popped up and went quickly before I could see what is said but I saw "beginning dump of physical memory" on there...(sorry I know nothing about computers so not sure what this means!)

When I try turn it on now, the Acer logo comes up but then it flicks to a black screen with just a cursor flashing in the top corner and I can't seem to do anything from there.

If anyone knows how I can fix this it would be amazing!!

    thanks!

PRESS F8 immediately after pressing the power on button

    Choose SAFE BOOT

Question have you loaded any new programs on to your Netbook? if so Uninstall that last program you installed while in safe boot mode.

This is a link to a program that will help you track down your blue screen problems.

    thanks for your reply!

I tried pressing F8 but it didn't do anything and still went to the blank screen with flashing cursor...the only button I can press which does anything is the F2 button which takes me to set up but I don't know if any of the options help me at all?

Someone mentioned to me that Aspire Ones have an in built recovery cd? is this true? I have not seen it anywhere on the web so guessing he was mistaken, anyone heard of this?

    thanks

If it's new you should be returning it back if possible.

Have you tried the alt f10 keys immediately after turning on, to see if you can recover using the built in hidden partition erecovery section on the harddrive

This OTHER INFO MAY NOT BE FOR YOU BUT HAVE A LOOK.

Try repeatedly tapping the F8 button as your computer is booting. You should then be presented with the black n white menu.

    Otherwise ALT+F10 starts the recovery.

I agree with "something back's" answer. Try that first. It is the easiest fix. Same thing happened to me. It is a very common problem with Acer net books. I re-flashed the BIOS and was up & running. No need to reformat the HD and all the misery of reinstalling everything. Follow the You Tube tutorial and I bet that will put you back in business. The main symptom of a corrupted BIOS is exactly what you are reporting, that is, a blank screen with a blinking cursor after a "blue screen of death" episode.

A memory dump (BSOD) in Windows can be caused by anything from low space on a hard drive, to corrupt hard drives, to faulty memory, only in rare cases does a BIOS issue cause a BSOD and an unbootable OS. But think about it, the BIOS is stored in ROM, which isn't too easily corrupted.

If you want to risk flashing a BIOS before attempting to find out what caused the BSOD, thus risking your computer crashing during a BIOS update, making your machine unrecoverable, then go for it.

The smartest option would be to try repeatedly tapping the F8 key while the computer is booting to see if you can get to the Windows boot menu, choose the option to not automatically restart on system faliure. This way when the computer BSODs you can grab the code and make sure it's not related to bad RAM, or a bad HDD. Either that or try to get in under safe mode.

Bad RAM can cause the system to crash mid way through a BIOS flash - Crash during flashing means you'll have to replace the BIOS chip itself
A bad HDD can be recovered or replaced

If your BIOS is booting to the point where you see the Acer boot logo, and/or you can access your BIOS settings with the F2 button, then chances are there's nothing wrong with your BIOS.

As I said before, if you want to risk killing your laptop with a BIOS flash, go for it, but there are other options before you do so.
