Hi everyone, I just thought I would post here to let you all know that I have written up a guide on how to get CrunchBang running on the Aspire One.

If anyone has not heard of CrunchBang then it is an Ubuntu based distribution using the openbox window manager. It is designed to have a good balance of speed and functionality and this makes it very suitable for a netbook. Using it with the sickboy/kuki kernel I have all the hardware working with no problems as of yet and was suprised that even hibernate works.

If you would like to try it out then the installation guide can be found at http://crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/howto/aspireone

I will be editing the wiki page to add more information such as undervolting and fan control in the near future as well.

    Thanks

So far I love what I see! I have just checked on it from the usb-pen and I can't wait to get home tomorrow. I will install it tomorrow night and evaluate it : ) Great guide!

I installed the Cruncheee version (originally made for eee) from CrunchBang, and it worked out of the box, with exception of the WiFi LED. Installing Sickboy's kernel took care of that problem, and also speeded up the boot process. So far I'm enjoying the experience.. The only question I've got is whether someone knows how to get rid of the Eee deamon icon from the taskbar.. It doesn't do anything since it's not installed on an Eee pc, so at the moment it's only taking up space. Anyone has any ideas?

    Nice work, Bassetts.

Has anyone got it working on the Aspire One SSD model, and without any issues?

I think the icon is related to the eee-daemon tools, so if you feel bold try uninstalling that app and see if it makes the icon disappear. Other than that (and probably much safer), isn't there some kind of 'preferences' or 'layout' option in one of the menus where you can amend settings and add/remove applications in the tool bar, desktop etc.?

From the CrunchBang Wiki regarding kuki kernel and headers:
What exactly is the benefit of installing the headers if it's optional?

Yeah, I've installed it on the SSD. I haven't got any problems, everything is working. I haven't tried the the two sd-slots yet though.

Cool. Thanks for the heads up, Jepser. I ran the live version on my SSD model and the OS seemed pretty fast. Wifi was also detected right away so this CrunchBang Linux, which I've never heard about until reading this thread, is looking very good. I'm definitely spending some time with this distro now and see how it goes. I'm confident that after installing the AAO tailor made Kuki-kernel as explained in the excellent CrunchBang Installation Guide everything pretty much will work OOTB.

You need them to compile and install software from source.

Thank you, HungOverOnATues. So in other words, the headers are needed if I need to install extra software after the kernel update to make sure it'll be compatible with the newly installed kernel? Or am I missing the point totally? :)

If you need to install certain extra software from source code after the kernel update. You can still install software from the repositories fine without it. At least, this is my understanding of it anyways. My experience with linux is pretty limited/basic, so I may be wrong.

edit: To be a little more specific I believe it's for compiling a kernel, modules or things of that ilk from source, not something needed for all software.

Thanks for the explanation, HungOverOnATues. Much appreciated.

I ran the full CrunchBang OS live version this time (I previously tried the Lite version which also worked great) and again it was incredibly fast to load and connect to the wireless network. Opening applications was swift and smooth. Firefox (which comes pre-installed) opened within 4-5 seconds. And we're talking LIVE session here. Very impressive!

could do with adding preperation instructions for windows users and maybe adding the deb files to the iso image with a shell script to install the scripts would make it easier for most people

I have installed CrunchBang with Sickboy^s kernel on my AAO 8GBSSD and it works perfect. CruchBang its the best Ubuntu that I have tried om the One. It is a real, easy configurable Linux distro, everything is working and the boot time is not far from Linupus. Openbox is the perfect, light desktop for a computer with small resources like the AAO.

    Let me quote from http://macles.blogspot.com/2009/01/live ... blems.html:

Crunchbang Linux seems to be among the top distros to work oob with the AAO. I have exactly the same experiance.

CrunchBang looks very promising. I followed the instructions listed in the 1st post and installed the regular CrunchBang. Everything is working except for my card readers, even after upgrading to the sickboy kernel, and adding the special changes to make it work.

This is what's in my log:

Very strange. Both my card readers worked out of the box after instaling, even with the default kermel. Perhaps you should go for a reinstall, and be sure that there are cards in both the readers under installation (?).

On a hunch, I tried a different SD card and it worked great. The card that doesn't work is a 16GB Patriot...any obvious reason this card wouldn't work?

I installed CrunchEEE ,,,It picked up my wireless rite off the bat,,,All the usb and my card readers worked.
without having to change the kernel.Or configure mad wifi.
Im very happy with the Crunchbang way of doing things,,,I also run Crunchbang on my regular Laptop with no problems at all.
I havent tried to load my wireless card with heavy downloads to see what the real performance is,,,If that gives me an issue
then ill try whats listed above.
    I have the 8gig ssd.
