The reg have updated that story with a UK price of £299. Not sure whether that fits with the predicted US$399.

While that's a good hundred quid higher than the current UK price, it's not actually much higher than the original entry price for the HDD model was last summer. If the retailers can squeeze it closer to £250, I think it'll be hotcakes time again.

After researching both the 8.9 and the 10.1 models I purchases the smaller one for $298 at Walmart. I get the 160GB HDD for the price of a 120. The ONLY thing I didn't like was the 3-cell battery. Here are the things that turned me off of the 10.1:
I like the smaller form factor of the 8.9. The 10.1 is about an inch larger in length and width (but about the same thickness).
The 8.9 inch screen is plenty big enough to do what I need to do. Bigger is better, but the overall form factor gets bigger, too.
    It's a netbook, not a notebook.
I like that the smaller one has two SD slots.
The newer larger AAO is made by a different manufacturer. Since I know the quality of the 8.9 AAO I didn't want to wait a year to see if the new manufacturer made a product as well as the current one.
They both ship with the same software so there's no difference there.
1GB RAM is enough for me now and 1.5GB should be enough of an upgrade in the future.
Although the new One has bluetooth, I'm not that impressed by that anyway....
Acer is supposed to stop shippping the 8.9 to the US in February so if you want one you need to move now.

So here I am with my new netbook....

based on the specs given from this site and amazon the 10" is only larger physically by a half inch for both width and length.

The reason for no dual-core Atom in any mobile (and I have been telling everyone about this) is the fact when the Atom netbooks came out they completely slaughtered the notebook market for Intel. And at the time of offering the Atom N270 to the notebook manufacturers they were nearly at cost price (of manufacture). To try to ensure this they coupled it exclusively with the 945GSE so that it would be less appealing. Unfortunately for them that wasn't the case. So if they do release a dual core Atom for the netbook segment their slow sales of the C2D notebooks will drop even further. So unless they get out a more powerful and power efficient cpu for the notebook segment they are not gonna let the no profit dual core Atom netbook slaughter their more profitable C2D notebooks.

Questions for anyone that has the new 10inch model....

Will it boot off the SD card? The 8.9 models do not boot of the SD card, only the USB stick.

If they are still using the JD devices chipset then the answer is no. If they are using an USB-based multi-reader chipset like other laptops, then the answer might be yes.

Why do I care? I want to have different OS on a SD and boot it.

Mine does boot off an sd card, though painfully slow...this is only because I have a very cheap one with slow read times. I'm sure with a decent speed one it would be ok, but I have used a cheap usb stick and it's at least twice as fast.

To anyone considering the 8.9" model, you may want to seriously consider getting the 10.1" model if you think you ever may want to upgrade the memory or hard drive without having to dismantle the entire machine.

The 10.1" model (mine is a D150-1165) has panels on the bottom that allow easy access to the RAM and to the hard drive. The 8.9" model requires you to take apart the entire machine to get to the RAM and hard drive. Also, Unlike the 8.9" model, that has 512MB hard-wired onto the motherboard which limits you to 1.5GB (the board only supports up to 2GB), the 10.1" model comes with a single 1GB stick of memory, that is upgradable to 2GB.

At this point I have upgraded mine from the original 160GB 5400RPM SATA w/ 8MB cache hard drive to a 320GB 7200RPM SATA w/ 16MB cache drive. I have also replaced the 1GB memory stick with a 2GB stick.

This machine is SCREAMING FAST considering how small and portable it is, BUT, the CPU is your limiting factor if you want to try and use Windows Vista. I have tried Vista Ultimate, which may have been the problem, but when I tried doing anything more than 1 task at a time it became very sluggish.

If anyone has tried a different version of Vista that supports the Aero theme with decent results, please, let me know! I'm sure Vista Ultimate has far more bloat than other versions do!

Rather than Vista, I use Windows 7 Beta for the Aero Glass theme. Installs quickly and easily with auto online updates enabled. Haven't run the WEI yet, but all Aero functions are enabled, as well as all the nice extras W7 has to offer. I might not run the WEI just to insure everything stays enabled.

I installed the morning after I got my D150. I partitioned the hdd while making coffee, then started the install off my desktop's dvd-drive over wifi, and it was done installing and auto updating before I was ready for work. I also installed the latest synaptics two finger drivers for the touchpad. I love flicking windows across the screen and watching them bounce back, and I noticed that I rarely use the trackpad buttons anymore.

I'm interested in which HD you purchased, where, and how it runs in the 10". I just got a 10" and was thinking of bumping the memory and the drive and teh drive you've got sound ideal if it's not too much. Does teh machine run hotter? How long do you get on a 6 cell bat? Thanks.

Are there instructions somewhere for doing this kind of thing? I would like to install Win 7 on my new 10" AA1 either as the sole OS or as a dual boot with the existing XP. I could do it wirelessly or via eternet cable if I had instructs how to access the DVD drive on my PC (really an iMac running Windows in Bootcamp).

    Thanks--

I'm not familiar with iMacs, but hopefully you can share the optical drive?

On a Windows XP machine, I simply right click on the dvd drive and select Security and Sharing. In the window that opens, I click the box next to "Share this drive on the network."

On the Acer, I partitioned the HD into to two almost equal partitions, you will need at least 20gigs for the Windows 7 install.

Next, I placed the copy of Windows 7 I had burned onto DVD into the Windows XP desktop's DVD drive. On the Acer, I go through the network neighborhood and browse to the desktop's DVD drive, and then click on the exe file on the Windows 7 DVD, and the install process begins.

Takes about 35 mintues to install, and then another 15-20 minutes to update. Pretty easy!

gonna try this soon. got an external dvd writer & am downloading win 7 rc1 right now. i made back up of aa1 yesterday, the dvd backup that is suggested, so I may just slam Win 7 on there as the only op sys. Any downside to dong that when I have the rescue/recovery disks?
