    Re: Custom desktop script

:p *Bows in awe for the creator of this script* :p

The reason for such a submissive behaviour is because I very recently had to do my 3rd recovery since I got my Mean Blue Dream Machine and this script fixed everything I was looking for in other threads both here and from Macles* blogspot. I am like many other users a total newb when it comes to Linux but I have really enjoyed the tweaking despite two previous setbacks. So Koro, if I ever meet you let me buy you a Jamaican Red Stripe and a Gentlemans Jack!

As for those who complain about the script, read the early posts once more and see if the script does anything it is not supposed to do. Its clear as crystal to me what it does and what is expected from you, the users prior to installing it. I have read all the posts in this thread and many of the ones complaining about the script have clearly extensive knowledge of Linux and the file system so when a complete stranger to Linux like me can get this script up and running on first go its NOT the script that is to blame!!

    Best regards,

    Re: Custom desktop script

    Hello,

I would very much like to run this script, (because I'm bored with the Linpus-desktop.)
Looks fantastic! But, as I am a Linux-rookie, I have two questions:
    1. My AAO is in Dutch, in what way will this script alter the language to English?
    2. I've installed some extra applications (OpenOffice 3.0 / Wine / pyChess. Will this script influence them?

I apologize if these questions sound dum to you, but I would hate it if I got this beautiful desktop, but lose OpenOffice 3.0

    Re: Custom desktop script

    Hey ArievH!

Like you, I am as you say a Linux-rookie but I would assume that this script don't alter your default language from Dutch to English. I suspect it supports all pre-installed, "normal" languepacks and you should not have any problems.

As for the other applications you have installed I suggest you run a back-up of your files, contacts and such in case they get erased during the transaction of the script. If they do, reinstall them and import your data. I am afraid this don't really answer your questions but I would give it a try. My little BlueMeanDreamMachine is beyond description after having ran the script and I LOVE it!!

One last thing. When you run the script you will see that it takes a long time to run and your AAO will seemingly "freeze" up. Do not worry if all the windows close (terminal and ....w/e) and nothing seems to be happening, the terminal window will re-appear and tell you it will reboot your AAO.
Maybe this should be added to your original post Kor0? I was sure something was wrong during the transaction of this script and almost did a forced boot (pressing and holding the power-button for 8 seconds) and was thinking "Oh well, what can you expect? I'm new to Linux, I probably have done something wrong". Just make sure you're on a stable connection as mentioned bu Kor0 and have the AC plugged in and you'll be fine ArievH!

    Best regards,

    HanDerre

    Hi Handerre,

Well I also took the plunge!
    And yes, it works!
    Looks very nice.!
    Have a few questions:
    1. I' can't find my former mail-app. It seems to be replaced by Claws mail. Is this correct, or is the former mail-app somewhre "hidden"?
    2. The same question for the original agenda- and contacts-apps
    3. Is there an easy way to put programm-icons on the desktop?

    Re: Custom desktop script

I am such a linux newbie it's not funny. Was trying this script which was working fantastically to start, then ran into the above problems with missing dependencies. But since had been mucking about with computer all afternoon since buying it was tired and didn't read the forum carefully to see how to fix problem. Now have what others appear to call a 'brick' - a computer that will only boot up to a black screen and a little x. I have been trying for the last three hours to make a recovery thingie but I don't know how to do that either - I've got the disk but don't understand the instructions - was I supposed to make the usb recovery tool BEFORE I killed my new toy??? And I tried following the various instructions I found on the web (including the bloke who mucked up his wife's new Acer) but they are all too techie for me and I don't get it. Maybe the problem also is that I have been trying to use an external hard drive, and that doesn't seem to work. I have borrowed my housemate's flash drive, but still don't really have a clue what I'm supposed to do. While I'm mucking about trying to see if putting the stuff from the CD onto this flash drive helps (? But I don't even know which bits you are supposed to put on??) is there any one out there with simple and clear suggestions for an eejit like me? I think I am going to have to go to bed in the next half hour and hope for the computer faeries to visit in the night with inspiration...

    Wow, do I feel dumb...

    Re: Custom desktop script

I've searched and searched, but I can't find onemail, nor contacts nor any of the original PIM.
Is there a way to recover these apps, without losing this fantastic sript and go back to the boring Acer-desktop?

    Re: Custom desktop script

    Hello HanDerre,

How can I reinstall the original PIM-apps (contacts, agenda, onemail and IM).
They seemed to have disappeared while running the script.
I don't care about the data, because I can import that again, my question is about the apps itselves!

Any help would be very nice!

    Sincerely
    ArievH

    Re: Custom desktop script

:) It's amazing what sleep and a good read of the forums will do. Have now successfully created my USB recovery stick (on a brand new stick which will be dedicated to my aao's recovery from here on out) and am waiting as it reinstalls the factory settings. Then I can have another go at running the script, following the thread advice more carefully. Hoorah! :D

    Re: Custom desktop script

    Hi again ArievH!

    1) Yes that is correct. The script replaces your default mail-app. with Claws. You might find the former mail-app in the complete list of applications when you open "Add/Remove programs", but I haven't tried that. I use Windows Live mail myself and have set up Claws to fetch my mails from there.
    2) Same answer, Yes. I am not very happy about the contacts tho. I cant import my contacts from my other apps but if I find a solution or work-around to it I'll post it either here or somewhere more appropriate.
    3) I haven't figured that out myself yet (still Linux-rookie)!

I'm sorry but I don't know. I don't miss these apps myself since all my data are stored on the web in my Windows Live area.

    Best regards,

    HanDerre

    Re: Custom desktop script

    Hi again Master k0ro!

I have a few questions for you:

I tried that but still it boots with the file manager opening up. Any other suggestions as to stop that from happening on every reboot?

Can you explain further please? I'm sorry for asking this but now that my BlueMeanDreamMachine works 99% perfectly I want that last percentage as well and I'm scared £$½¥#¤%& of doing something wrong to having to go through the whole process of system recovery and installing your award-winning script once more. Exactly what do I have to edit, where do I put the command-line? Basically, how do I do this? :geek:

So what you're saying is that there is no way to expand the main SSD with a SD card (I have a SanDisk Extreme III, 8Gb card) ? :ugeek:

Have you done so yet? Sounds brilliant to me! Sort of like giving SlickBilly a swift kick in the familyjewels (if this was Windows-related) and yelling "Out you go you evil force!!"

Will I be notified of future updates simply by subscribing to this thread?

Final note, k0ro: You are my Idol! Again, I have no words for the work and effort you put up making this script. The transition of the AAO is like Phoenix from the flames! Fantastic, awesome, brilliant...(I guess that was 3 words but they don't justify the work you done!) I'm eternally grateful for this!!! :p

    Best regards,

    Re: Custom desktop script

Just a question : how can I modify the menu you have by right click with the mouse on the desktop ?
I installed applications using Wine, and after unstalling these applications, links remained in the menu...
I can't find where are files configuring the menu !
    Thanks !

    Re: Custom desktop script

OK, I admit, I am very, very stupid.!
Never try out something, if you are not sure what will happen!!!

I thougt the xkill (ctrl+alt+esc) would kill all running programs.
    So I used it, but
    STUPID!!!
Now I'm stuck with a completely empty desktop.
    All icons are gone.
Even a right-clic doesn't bring up the advanced menu anymore!
Is there a way to recover them? maybe one-by-one?
But how do I do that?
Formerly, you could right-clic on an existing icon and you could add an icon, or map, or starter to the desktop.

I fear the only way to restore all this is to run the script again and after that personalize the desktop all over again.
    Is this correct?

    Sincerely Arie

    Edit:
I ran the script again and everything was back to normal in about 15 minutes.
I panicked a bit to soon.

    Re: Custom desktop script

This sounds like the perfect solution to the kid friendly desktop, thanks for sharing K0r0 *bow*

    But something went wrong...

Ran the script (grabbed way back on page 1),
watched it download and install loads,
    watched it "removing linpus files"

Then it hit a snag whilst doing something with fedora and stopped dead, leaving me in terminal.
(I copied the error text, but couldn't get onto the usb stick to paste it into a new text file)

Upon reboot, it just gave a black screen with the little x cursor and does nowt else.
btw, it was on a wired net connection, not a dodgy wireless.

    Any thoughts ??

Thankfully had the sense to make a recovery USB stick yesterday (superb little system, took minutes to make & 16mins to recover !!)

    === edit ===
    Don't fret, I found the solution on page 18 of this thread;
Remove VLC and MPLAYER from the packages_to_install section of your script.

I'll run the edited version & let you know how it behaves :) *fingers crossed*

    Re: Custom desktop script

As far as I can see, this script fails systematically. I does not change the desktop if you have already modified the AA1, and it does not change the desktop/system if you have reset it from a USB and works with the standard "lite" desktop. It runs until after the "removing linpus..." part, after that it tries to install Fedora 8 but only reports errors. This happens on a wired network as well as on a wireless LAN, with cabled power supply as well as batteries etc. Any suggestions?

    Re: Custom desktop script

As mentioned : This script fails systematically. It removes the "lite" desktop, but reports errors as soon as it has started installing Fedora, meaning the AA1 has to be reset with the USB recovery boot. There is no difference whether you use a wired or wireless network, or have or have not modified the AA1 before you run it. Suggestions?

    Re: Custom desktop script

yl1204: If you'd taken the time to read the post literally above your 2 identical posts (within a minute!),
you would see I had the same error as you and found the solution on page 18 of this very thread.
In the post directly above yours I also posted a basic description of the solution as well.

Hope you managed to get your AAO sorted & working with the cool little script.
If not, maybe worth trying the script directly after a full USB recovery.

Just make sure you edit the script file first, removing the mplayer, mplayer plugin and vlc items from it's "packages to install" section
