It is my understanding that the SD card will no longer expand your internal storage. This is a feature of the original Linpus configuration.

    Re: Custom desktop script

    A) I installed the script, I like it a lot but here is a list of things that don't work now

    1. Some things like "System Monitor" are now missing from menu
    2. Home screen ,log out sleep buttons don't work
    3. Open office stars with large fonts - can be fixed by viewing docs at 70 %
    4. Some times wireless password is lost - can be fixed by enabling - " Start Gnomo services at start"
    5. SD Card is no more a disk expansion thing, its just another card
    6. Ctr+Alt+del Does not bring system monitor

    B) I also installed Avant Window navigator - to get transparent panel [ for that I got gecko library package missing problem , and I had to remove firefox 3 and put back firefox2 - look at the following to solve this look at : http://macles.blogspot.com/2008/08/depe ... e-one.html ]
Avant Window navigator - AWN is running very slow , any ideas ?

    1. That's a feature.
    2. That's a feature. Just close the lid to get the laptop to sleep.
    3. See elsewhere in this thread.
    4. See elsewhere in this thread (looks like you already fixed it yourself, though).
    5. That's a feature.
    6. That's a feature.

Think about what this script is supposed to do: remove the Acer/Linpus customizations and restore the standard behavior of the XFCE desktop. The things that don't now work *are* the Acer/Linpus customizations that the script was specifically meant to remove. If you want to keep these customizations, there's a how-to guide in the how-to section that lets you enable some of the stuff left disabled in the standard setup while keeping the customizations. It sounds like you might want to go that route -- i.e., reset your system to the factory defaults, update it with Live, and then just enable the right-click menu and perhaps customize the panel a bit.

for the life of me, can't get this thing to work. Enabled/disabled Gnome Services etc. _always_ asks for WEP pass at startup

    Re: Custom desktop script

    Thanks a bundle KOro,

brilliant post and solutions to problems. As a first time linux user, I had gone through macles instructions and those on the road to elisium to install skype, gimp, picasa and FF3. And also gone through the hassle of getting them on the limited acer desktop. Your script does it all so painlessly!

only one (minor) glitch. I use amarok and, as per previous posts in relation to office programs, the font size has increased a lot. Is there any solution to this?

    go n-eiri an bothar leat!

    Maybe I spoke too soon!
apart from the font size being increased in amarok, it appears that the microphone isn't picking up anything using skype. It was working with skype prior to the changeover of desktop. Unlike others' experiences, the skype webcam does appear to work.
I can always reinstall from usb and then run the script again, but should there be an easier way I'm all ears!
    thanks

well I haven't seen a solution posted so I reinstalled from usb key, live updated (now 11 updates rather than 4 previously-and the wifi password is now kept on reboot). I ran the script after live update and skype now works fine - no more problems with the microphone. Still the same glitch with the amarok fonts though.

    Re: Custom desktop script

This looks like an awesome script that will save A LOT of time. I tried to download the script from blogs.nologin.es and got multiple "site not available" errors throughout the day. I found the script at ZShare and was able to download it, but when I run it the script looks as if it has to reconcile a file on blogs.nologin.es. It ends up timing out and displays check network connection. I have a good connection. Does anyone know if the site is still up and available? _mike

    Re: Custom desktop script

I read through the whole thread again and didn't see it. However, google knows the answer as usual:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=220502

I was able to get my post-script AA1 to a satisfactory state using those instructions. YMMV.

WARNING: Don't do the part about FontPath in your xorg.conf. X crashed on reboot for me with that configuration in there.

    Re: Custom desktop script

    Hey guys,

I have just downloaded the script and am attempting to run it now - without much luck. I am on a (very) reliable network connection, yet each time the script tries to fetch the primary.sqlite.bz2 file I receive some kind of mirror error (temporary failure in name resolution, or name or service not known).

It now appears as though my ethernet connection is broken... Does the script alter this mid way through?

    Thanks,
    BT

EDIT :: I stopped the installation, rebooted and now everything seems to be running OK... not sure what happened there :S

    Re: Custom desktop script

    thanks for this excellent script!
I just got my Aspire, and just couldn't bear the linpus environment. Now it looks like a real computer :)
I only had issues with VLC due to missing dependencies, but fortunately there's rpmfind.net and I was able to install all dependencies. Then the script ran fine and I'm now looking to a nice clean desktop.

I will however try to run onelinux.org on it (anyone tried yet?) and once I get my DELL DW1490 WiFi card install my beloved OSX on it :)

    thanks for the effort.

    Re: Custom desktop script

I just tried onelinux on my 120g HD/Windows AA1 and this is the nicest looking OS on the Aspire that I've seen so far. Wireless didn't work at 1st, but it seems like fiddling with the wireless switch caused it to work. Since then on each boot wireless works properly. I have only been booting from the LiveUSB (created with unetbootin), and am trying to figure a way to install to another USB flashdrive because I don't want to partition the HD. My 1st attempt failed due to lack of space (2GB) - I will try to get an 8GB one to try. Has anyone else tried this?

I really wanted to install to a SDHC, but I read that the Aspire can't boot from the SD reader. Anyone know how to get around this?

    Re: Custom desktop script

how do you set up DHCP connection in the aspire one? i mean i don't have a wireless router yet but i do have broadband connection, and also, i'm under the impression that wired [ using ethernet cables] is much more stable than trying to update wirelessly which can mess up with my system if the connection somehow becomes intermittent.

    Re: Custom desktop script

i have tried onelinux. i made the cd and loaded it onto my computer, but the WIFI didnt work. i could only use wired internet.

i tried a couple methods and it still didnt work, so i reverted back to windows xp. i am downloading the recovery cd (linpus) onto my other computer to put it back on my AAO because i love linux and that seems to be the only one that works for me atm.

are there any linux that work "out of the box" with the AAO (including the wifi drivers)?

I had run this script two weeks ago, and I'm very satisfied with it, but I noticed something: my logfile in /var/log/Xorg.0.log keeps growing and growing!
It is a repeating block of text about the video driver, not reporting real errors, just repeating this text for ever and ever:

    Re: Custom desktop script

Do you have "Option "DPMS"" in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file? If so, you can try commenting out that line and see whether this stops in the error log.

    Cheers.

I had tried the script last month and it worked. Now After the Sep Live update script does not work . At the Fedora installation packages it complains about missing packages . Has anyone run this scripts AFTER running ACER's Sep Live Update patch ?

    Re: Custom desktop script

    Acerj,

I've successfully run the script a few times (each time I experiment and mess up my machine!)

But I tried again the last two days and it no longer works. I've tried it without using live update and also using them (now 11 update patches) and both ways I get missing dependencies as follows:

Error: Missing Dependency: libpulse.so.0(PULSE_0) is needed by package mplayer
Error: Missing Dependency: libpulse.so.0(PULSE_0) is needed by package vlc
Error: Missing Dependency: libdvdnavmini.so.4 is needed by package mplayer
Error: Missing Dependency: libdvdnav.so.4 is need by package vlc-core
Error: Missing Dependency: libopendaap.so.0 is needed by package vlc core
Error: Missing Dependency: libdvdnavmini.so.4 is needed by package mplayer

Using the script after reinstallation of the OS from USB is not working for me anymore. if anyone has any suggestions before I set off on travels tomorrow morning, I'd appreciate them.

    Thanks

EDIT: I see on macles weblog http://macles.blogspot.com/ that there's a way to make liveupdates optional. I'll try that when I get home from work.
further edit: the macles line does allow one to select which updates are wanted but updating with the first five only (as I had before 6-11 were available) still results in the above issue.
