    Hi,

I just got 1 of these a short while ago. Seems to be working ok, and I've been tweaking to try improve performance. I've upgaded RAM to 2gb, but it still seems that programs are a bit slow starting (from click to when they appear).

I've run HDtach, which seems good (~4% cpu, 109Mbps burst, 52avg), and net speed was ok, so I'm kind of puzzled.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

    Jim

Atom N270 and N280 processors, although supporting HyperThreading, and running at 1.6 Ghz, aren't exactly speed deamons. The Atom processors at 1.6 Ghz are akin to current Celerons at about 8-900 mhz when we are talking processing power. You can only expect to get so much out of them, but on the other hand you get the advantage of low power consumption which equals lower CPU temps and longer batteryruntime compared to processors with the same abilities.

What Antivirus are you using? Application start-ups will vary alot depending on what AV you are using. Since all .exe will be scanned before it's run. If it's the default Mcafee, then there's your answer. ;)

    Tamrac,

Boy, you all are FAST :)!

I was just about to post again.

I had encountered some problems (to me, anyway) earlier where when I started IE7, it would sit with "Connecting..." in the default tab for awhile, before letting me use IE. I had gotten around that by disabling all of the Mcafee plugins in IE.

After posting my msg above, I decided to try to remove Mcafee completely. The place I work wants us to run a different AV anyway (Symantec). So, anyway, I uninstalled Mcafee Security Suite, and then ran the Mcafee removal tool (http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507), and voila, no more slow app startups.

I also ran something called "PC Decrapifier", but I didn't really find anything else that I wanted to remove (I already removed the MS Office trial and MS Word - have my own copy of MS Office).

    Looks good now.

    Thanks,
    Jim

    DutchDK,

Understood about CPU. As mentioned in the post I just made, I think that I figured it out. What was puzzling me was that I have some older machines (including an old HP TC1100 Tablet with a 1.1GHz CPU) that seemed to launch apps much faster that the D150. As I mentioned, I had checked the "usual suspects", drive speed, memory, etc., so it wasn't obvious what the problem might be, until just a little while ago :)...

    Thanks,
    Jim
