I did read the thread, and that's why I suggested a poll. There are various reasons posted, not just with people booting from a USB and why I thought it worth seeing how many were related to 'as is out of the box' as there might not be that many. If you are going to muck around with booting from USBs etc then you might expect something to go weird, but if you are just booting up something you have done nothing to, then you don't expect it to go black.

lems: that's fair, and you could be right. it's just that MAN is this a long thread and every couple of pages we sort of start at square one with some of the comments, you know?

The main reason I'm so convinved its usb related is because I've managed to reproduce it by yanking out the USB while the bios screen is loaded (not good for either the laptop OR the device as it turns out but hey in the name of science). I'm not sure that's enough for the guys at the service centre though.

Anyway these bios issues are a funny beast. A lot of people have reported across the board issues with lower brightness settings on both models, - which is why there's an update coming but i know of 4 aspire ones that run at lowest setting with no problems whatsoever.

I seriously considered trying out an "openbios" replacement, but the compatibility lists are pretty disheartening at this point. I'm not that brave :) Maybe in a couple of years...

I totally get where you are coming from too, but 2 posts before my post 'johnny' says "Well, it's definitely put me off from buying one. I really hope this fixes the problem as it's a great machine." and that makes me sad. I've had no issues with mine, and I'm really really happy with it and if it's putting people off buying because they see a big long thread and don't read it's mainly USB related then our acer crowd isn't going to grow.

I thought a poll might make people see only a really small amount of people have the prob without doing something they probably won't touch. I know I wont be booting from a USB. And we all know some people are going to have probs anyway, because thats products mass produced today, whether it be acer, asus, toshiba or any other brand.

I'm pretty sad too, I recommend this laptop to everyone who asks me about mine (I get stopped on the street around here lol)

I think that's a really good idea. But at the same time, I've run into at least three threds here with this same issue and those guys had no idea this was related. I think it people were sure of the source, it would be a good and easy poll, but if people are not I worry that there's a tendency for only those with the problem to actually respond which isn't really the point at all right :)

Maybe what we need is a poll and a sticky to tell people, "look if you have these symptops don't panic, here's what you do".

Yup pretty sure this is Usb related - my replacement Aspire One (tottally unmodified) has just refused to boot after a tried to boot off a Usb stick - a bios flash fixed it okay. Pretty sure this is what happened to the orginal machine I had too - but I was using the One with a Usb Cdrom, with a slightly dodgey power supply - so I assumed that had frazzled it - rather than trying any Usb flashing tricks.

I just downloaded and installed the bios. 3304 shows correctly in bios. Everyone cross their fingers and hope that this bios release fixes the boot issue. :D Did notice that my brightness range is less but I'd rather have a reliable system at this point. Hopefully I can get to more pressing issues.

what method are you using to confirm the problem? If they cannot fix it I will just avoid the issue all together.

P.S.: bios 3109 (it is not a problem of bios)
Linus tried both with original hardware.....ok, and home xp sp3 with Zif cf transcend 8GB 300x-1gb ram 667MHz.....ok.
    Then with bios 3301.......ok

3304 From Macles solved my problem. You can download it on macles.blogspot.com or www.acer.com.tw :) No fan hack still working for me (with acerfand)

How do you know it solved the problem when the problem is random? You can go for weeks without the problem occurring.

    Acer Aspire One BIOS Recovery
The AA1 has a built-in BIOS recovery routine, making it possible to flash the BIOS even if the system doesn't boot anymore. It's only meant for emergencies and may void your warranty, so use at your own risk.

    Follow every step carefully!

First format an USB stick with FAT. I've simply used the procedure posted here. Any FAT formatted stick will probably work, i did not try.

Download the BIOS you want to flash, and put both FLASHIT.EXE and the BIOS file in the root directory of the stick. Rename the BIOS file to ZG5IA32.FD, that's important. Do not remove the USB stick.

Turn the AA1 off, make sure both battery and AC adapter are connected. Press Fn+Esc, keep it pressed and press the power button to turn the AA1 on. Release Fn+Esc after a few seconds, the power button will be blinking. Press the power button once. The AA1 will now initiate the BIOS flash, do not interrupt it under any circumstances. After a while the power button will stop blinking, and the AA1 will reboot shortly after. Wait patiently.

The BIOS has been flashed and all settings reset to default.

If for some reason you made a mistake during the procedure and it doesn't reboot by itself wait 5 minutes before turning it off, just to be safe that it isn't still flashing the BIOS.

same thing for me with my A1 .
It arrived juts after I tranfered lot of data on A1 from external HD .
So do you think it could be a problem of temperature ?
(overheating on processor due to lot of work ?)
My A1 was in a cold room , with clean area around it , all good conditions for a good ventilation .

So I repeat the question :
Does it arrive after transferring lot of data ? (or working hard during 1 hour )

I've had it happen to me twice. Once I was trying to reduce the flex in the keyboard (After I did the bt mod I think I put some screws in the wrong place) and when I powered it on..blank screen..thought I screwed something up! But it was just the bios thing. Computer wasn't on for more than 5 minutes before I started.

    Add me to your club.

My AAO was working fine, and then... Just the black screen of death.
It's been upgraded to 1.5 GB ram @ 523 MHz 2 weeks ago, & running Linpus.
The fan isn't turning, nor the HDD, when on AC (only) use if I turn it on and pull the plug off, a dim white screen flashes for about 1/10".
I've also tried to pull out the button battery, (I relocated it with it's support in the empty (3G/Wimax ?) compartement
using a pair of thin wires for easier later access).
I will have to undo this mod if this laptop is to be returned (no kidding).
As a bad news never comes alone, I found a 50 € speeding ticket in my mail box (58 Km/h in a 50 Km zone) flashed on the day I purchased this @§%$#& £² computer 1 Km from the dealer's location.

    Hi *.*,

I have a simple solution to the fan problem with the Bios version 3304.

Downgrade to version 3109 and then with an update without flashit.exe parameters "/ dc" and "/ mc from the batch file. So use "flashit ZG5_3304.fd / all" and lo and behold, fans can re-regulate by acerfand.

    Hi ! macles,

    OOOOPPPSS !
I was so exited to see this tread (1st page) that I posted without noticing it had 24 pages. :geek:

I've followed instructions (not sure I've grasped it all) :
Copied the 3304 file & flashit.exe @ root of Formated (FAT32) usb key, and tried to plug in in the AAO and did fn esc manip then turned it on, it blinked then hit power button once & nothing happened, the screen remains black.
Where did I blew it ?
