    hi all,
i have to share my story on this topic because i think it's a crazy one. i've had my ONE for almost a month now. i've also voided my warranty when i maxed out my ram (thanks to tnkgirl and her video). my ONE has just simply been hummin' along since and i've been really happy with it. i came across this forum while i was searching for accessories, by way of a link in wikipedia. i said wow, this is cool, i remember just breezing through this topic and macles' solution and then a couple of other topics before continuing my accessories search.
the next day, around midnight, on a reboot, i get the black screen with the l.e.d. staying lit........and i'm like...this isn't happening. i went scrambling for wikepedia then the link and then the topic and followed macles procedure and bam got my ONE working again.
Coincidence? if i hadn't looked in wikipedia, i wouldn't have any idea how to deal with a black screen error, ( i have a dell, a toshiba, never happened ever). basically, my ONE would have been in more than ONE pieces since i already voided the warranty on day 3.
Anyway, i would just like to thank everyone's contribution on this topic, and macles, thank you very much!!!!!

Just for the statistics, I also had to reload the BIOS. I had previously added 1GB of memory without problems. Mine went dead while I was reloading a partition image after experimenting with dual booting.

My one died on me just now, looks as though the mobo is dead (power LED on but no display and no other lights). I noticed a few weird things happening when I had my USB dvd drive plugged in (possible "bricked" BIOS as it were?). When I get my replacement (bought it less than 30 days ago thankfully) I will do the BIOS update and I hope that will solve this problem. I'll keep you guys posted.

    UPDATE: IT'S ALIVE!

Using good old macles' emergency bios recovery procedure I was able to update the Bios to v3.304. That of course solved the problem, and should hopefully solve the bricking bug as well. I had a feeling it was the bios...

TNX a lot to everyone, especially macles & Humvee !

You saved my butt, and a lot of unnecessary work for the ACER maintenance team. (You should get a free AAO for the touble you toke).

It finally worked after 3 trials with the stuff found here:

    http://www.acerpanam.com/synapse/forms/ ... =&areaid=2

Back in love with my AAO (or AA1). :)

Again: Thank You ! You guys ROCK !

    Hi all

Apologies if this is posted in the wrong place but I've got a different take on the dead AAO problem you all seem to have suffered. I bought 2 of the AAO A150 White 120Gb 512 Linux, one of which went to my lovely lady and the other I kept. I'd installed XP and Office 2k7 on mine (slow, but worked ok) and after about 18 days of ownership mine decided to lie down in a spectacular fashion. Would like to add, no hardware mods were undertaken, and I live in the UK so it's not like it was too hot for the AAO to function properly.

Powered the AAO on and it boots up to the XP logon screen. Enter my password and it starts to log on, then all of a sudden it powers off. Weird. So I try it again. Same thing. Boot to safe mode. Same thing. Boot to F8 startup menu and leave it on that screen. Same problem. Entered the BIOS, same problem. Exactly 1 minute and 10 seconds into being powered on, the power is cut to the device.

Tried plugging into mains, same problem. Tried with my girl's battery in my device, same problem. Tried with no battery, same problem.

Took it back to the store, got a refund as they had no more AAO's in stock and bought it from another store but this time, it's Blue!

    Anyone seen this problem before?

    Pete

I've had this happen to me a couple of times now, in sleep/hibernate mode (no way of telling which mode it was in when it crashed). I just hold the power button until it shuts off, then start it up again. This seems different than the death by rebooting that is also going on.

    Another one recovered with reflash.

I think it's a problem just with the options of the BIOS, not the BIOS itself. I entered the BIOS, disabled "Boot from network" and "D2D recovery", and when exit, AA1 went to the black screen (whitout reboot, just after exit saving from BIOS).

It has BIOS 3114, and after following the steps to reflash BIOS, it became alive again. The image I used was 3304.

After recovery, entered BIOS again to check:

    - BIOS is still 3114, not 3304 (which is what I downloaded from Asus FTP site)
    - The options I changed have been reverted (Boot from network and D2D recovery both enabled again)

Seeing this, I think the problem is some kind of "data corruption" on the BIOS options, and that e Fn+Esc method what does is to revert settings to default, instead to reflash the full BIOS.

My spire one had died after a live update. I have not done any mods to it so it was probably something to do with the bios. Can somebody tell me where to get the flashit.exe utility needed for macles solution?

My AAO died the day after I bought it. Hit the power button, the LED lit up for a bout 3 seconds, then turned back off. The battery still had a charge - nothing. Plugged in the AC adapter - nothing. So I begrudgingly read on the forum about how several other people had the same problem and I debated trying the macles fix, but was hesitant to try it because I didn't want to void my warranty. Then that evening, I tried turning it on again just for kicks and lo and behold, it had been resurrected! I didn't do anything to it at all - it just worked! Then it happened again the next day - LED on for a few seconds, but no power-on. So I removed the battery, plugged in the AC adapter, and it worked again! I'm sure this isn't a fix because other people said they've tried doing this without success, but now I'm thinking it might be a battery issue and not a BIOS issue in my case. Anyway, just thought I'd share my story... and keeping my fingers crossed that my One doesn't crap out on me again.

I had the same thing happen after 3 weeks of no problems. I haven't done a RAM upgrade, I've made various tweaks to the system, but nothing major--things like adding opera, adding a user, etc.

When I saw that the only fix, flashing the BIOS, might void the warranty, as it was only 3 weeks old, I took it back to J&R Music. They have a reasonable return policy, and took it back.

At this point, I don't know if I'll buy another one. I'm quite disappointed by that. I don't want to go traveling with it only to find it won't boot.

I debated trading it for the 120 gig model, but there's still the same issue--there's a known problem with a black screen that is only fixed (and at that, only sometimes) by flashing the BIOS which voids the warranty.

At this point I figure I'll just wait a little while and see what other entries, and what price drops, occur.

    Hi,

I seem to have run into the same issue, but my symptoms are slightly different. It started by simply freezing in the middle of normal use, so that I had to hold the power button down. On boot, it got as far as the blue screen with the acer logo before freezing.

I think flashing with 3304 worked the first time, but it took somewhere between 30 minutes and six hours (I left it running overnight). Nothing seemed to be happening during this time: the USB stick's activity light flashed a bit, and the power button was flashing, but the screen was completely blank. The only reason I thought I might have done it right was that on previous failed attempts the power light was solid, and there was an underline-cursor in the top left of the screen. in any case, when I got up it had booted to the display manager. I then needed to reset for some reason that I don't quite recall; I think it had frozen again? But this time it booted fine.

I was moving to university that day, so I didn't have a chance to reflash to get 3304 permanently, and today (the day after moving in) it happened again. Unfortunately, it seems to have been flashing for over nine hours now. If I press the power button, use the keyboard or touchpad nothing happens. I haven't tried holding the power button for fear of getting a total brick.

My USB drive is actually a microSD adapter, and the sd card in question has fairly low read speeds. But I can't imagine that would cause this to take so long?

You guys have already been very helpful in this thread - many thanks for that. Any advice for what I should do now?

Blue logo and black screen with linpus and bios 3109. I tried booting with a Slax Operatig System USB device and everything (in Slax) was fine, so it's not an hardware problem.

A few times (including the very first time we powered it on) our AAO has lit the power LED but done nothing else. Holding down the power button for 5-6 seconds until the LED goes out (yes, hard to see light with finger on button!) and the machine fires up fine when powered up again.

But the need for a BIOS flash seems to be preceeded by the power LED coming on and then going off, which is different. Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Well I'm glad to see people on here able to repair thier aspires. I just wish the macles tutorial would have been found a few days earlier which would have prevented me from sending in my aspire ONE for repair. Not only did i have to pay to ship my aspire one to acer they have had it now for 7 and a half weeks. I just glad this hasnt happened to any of you guys, but at least they decided to refund the price i paid for the laptop plus the shipping cost to ship it to repair
