Hey guys, my aspire one died yesterday and thanks to the solution I was able to fix it... temporarily.

The problem is that I have to do the Fn+ESC trick every single time I shutdown or restart the laptop, I've checked CPU-Z and it claims that the BIOS is still 3304, I've tried both upgrading and downgrading but it is still on 3304; any ideas?

My AOA 150 XP died today after I altered the boot order to try booting Puppy Linux from a usb stick. Thanks to this-
    http://macles.blogspot.com/2008/08/acer ... overy.html

I got mine back to life with only FLASHIT.EXE and ZG5IA32.fd on my FAT32 formatted memory stick - but only after I realised that I had renamed the bios file incorrectly. I'd downloaded and was using ver 3305

Surprisingly after the recovery, the bios setup shows I'm still on ver 3114, the time and date dont need resetting but the boot order has returned to the default setting. What's all this about? Why not 3305? So what files do I need on the memory stick to flash the bios from a working system. It looks like you need these two files for a recovery but more files and a bootable USB for a bios upgrade. Please will someone advise me on this. How should I install the latest bios?

Am I going to have all this boot failure problem again in a few days time if I'm on 3114?

It's a bit disappointing that the Acer AOA has this issue.

The recovery procedure will not always correctly update the BIOS itself. This was supposed to be fixed in 3305, at least according to the changelog, but it seems like it wasn't. Anyway if it still shows the old version just to a regular flash from DOS to version 3305, instructions are at the same link you already posted.

    To macles:
I've no time to do a bios upgrade at the moment but I should add my big thanks for your help. I hope Acer also appreciates the help you are giving their customers.

Later edit: Bios successfully flashed to ver 3305 after having first made the memory stick bootable with also the two extra files required.

    Hi everybody!
I updated BIOS to v3.305 last Friday. It worked fine although it didn't solve my problem with battery below 20% in Linpus (in Ubuntu there is not that problem).

Today my computer has worked fine until this afternoon. No it switchs off around 35 seconds after I turn it on. It happens in any case: if I don't insert the BIOS password, if I access BIOS, if I stay in the grub screen, if I start Linpus or if I start Ubuntu.

I am afraid of using the restore BIOS procedure because I think it will shut off during the flashing process.

What do you recommmend?? Any ideas??

I purchased the Acer Advantage program but I don't know if they will decline to fix the problem as that BIOS has not been released by Acer yet, but by macles.

    Please, help!!

I just want to confirm that I also had the same problem.

    Acer Aspire One A0A 150-1249
512 MB RAM stock, upgraded with Transcend DDR2 533 1GB chip (1.5 total)
    120GB HDD
BIOS 3114 out of the box

Installed WinXP Pro dual booting Ubuntu Linux

It worked fine for about a month, then died while I was away on vacation. Black screen, no BIOS or POST, no activity lights, power LED works, fan works, hard drive spins.

Came back to read the forum, followed flash instructions and everything back to normal. Haven't tried reverting back to 3109 yet.

I'm having the same issue when the battery drops between 30-23%. The LCD goes blank, this doesn't happen in Ubuntu??? I'm using linpus.

I had the same problem with a machine I bought which had been returned. It would run for 5 to 30 minutes and then just stop. No HD activity, none of the lights on the left except the power light. My recommendation is that you don't do any modification for about 30 days, just in case your machine is going to do this. I got another one 2 days later and it has worked for 5 months now. Maybe I'll get the nerve to do that ram upgrade , but it does what I need as it is.

There are literally MILLIONS of Acer Aspire One's shipped to all parts of the world. Don't let this thread put you off, this is a very very tiny group if you put all the AAO owners as a whole.... Go enjoy your AAO when it arrives as most of us have. Don't worry about it, hehe.

    Hey,

Dont let this stop you from buying the AAO, i have the same model you ordered and really love it.
I also had the probs with it, but a simple bios flash solved all my problems.

So i really would not cancel my order if i was you, just wait until you have it and enjoy it.

It happened all over again, but this time, I just plugged the USB stick with the bios etc... still on it (I've locked it in write protect mode), "FN +esc -> ON" and it was back up in two minutes. :)

Always keep the stick handy !

And yes I still love my AAO.

The first time was on September 17 th : viewtopic.php?f=24&t=903&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=230#p24205
This is the second time, but now It only takes minutes to bring it back up.
It's time (if not long overdue) for Acer to come out with a newer Linpus or other OS with all those bugs taken care of.
