Does the usb stick need to be bootable? I have a usb stick formatted fat32 already. Can I just place the needed files in the root directory of the usb? Little confused here. Thanks - Rxman

Well my aspire a150 has died after a month of use, it was working fine then tried to turn it on later in the day and it just wont boot, there's power there but thats it.

I upgraded the ram 3 weeks ago and had not noticed any issue's at all till this happened.

    Bloody annoyed!

At least my asus 701 is still going strong.

for the recovery bios trick it doesn't need to be bootable, just fat32 and have the file named properly.

Yeah, this is a big, big problem.

Mine is at the reapir depot, and the one I purchased for my daughter
I'm brining in tomorrow, still in it's shipping box unopened,
    to get it fixed.

Why hasn't Acer announced a general recall of this defective product ?

I bought my "One" (120 HDD, 1 Gb Ram, XP SP3) 8 weeks ago.

On 6 October power led on, screen black and nothing happening.

Took it to the local Acer dealer, address from Acer site as under international travellers warranty, so they know what they are doing.

Big mistake! Loay International of Oman have the worst custormer service attitude I've ever come across.

First they say, did you buy it here?
    Me, no
    Them, OK not our responsibility.
Me, I have warranty it's only 6 weeks old.
Them, grudgingly, we'll look at it and call you in 3 working days.

4 days later I call them.

Them, motherboard problem, we've ordered from it the UK be here on Tuesday, call you then.

    Wednesday, I call them.
Them, not here yet, maybe Saturday.
    Me, service manager please.
    Them, not here.
Thursday am, me to service centre.
    Me, where manager?
    Them, he busy.
Me, tell him I'm here, not moving till he comes out.
Them, after intercomm call, he's free.
Manager, shows me order form saying part available in UK delivery Friday.
Me, Why not replace it complete.
Manager, you not buy from here.
Me, after much explaining to him how to run a customer service centre, got promise he would phone me Saturday.

    Sunday, I call them
Me, why you not call and when will it be ready.
Manager, part not here, call you tomorrow.
Me, put phone down before have heart attack.

    Monday, Manager call me
Manager, part not available in UK, we try somewhere else.
Me, why not when you said it was and showed order confirmation that it was.
    Manager, we try somewhere else.

Tuesday, they call, no part available,
Wednesday, secretary just call, no motherboard available, don't know when it will be in.

    AAAAGH!!!

So, does anyone know the email address of Gianfranco Lanci, Acer Inc. CEO and President, because he is now going to get a "Snottygram" from this very upset customer.

Mine (150-1493) is dead today, after 10 days of use. I was in bios changing the settings to reboot from a usb key, when I hit F10 the machine never boot nor did even post. The green light is on an the fans are working, but nothing more happens. No hardware upgrade or opening was performed.

Can I save my sensitive data without losing the warranty (I mean taking apart the HD)?

Are people trying a long 5-6 seconds hold down of the power button before going for a reflash? Twice, our Aspire has sat there with nothing but the power light. Holding the button until the light goes off (yes, hard with your finger over the light!) has fixed it both times.

Yes, that always works for me. The question is, why is it crashing? I think it gets hung during the hibernation procedure.

Both times ours has needed the long power button push, it's been booting from cold.

There seem to be three (or more!) different issues.

    1) Some have hardware get unreliable and die. Nothing short of a hardware swap will fix this.
    2) Some have the machines lockup at boot and a BIOS restore is required. I *think* these people report a black screen and no power light.
    3) Some people (including us, twice) have the machine lockup at boot and a long (5-6 second) press and hold of the power button cures it. In our case, the power light was on. You need to press and hold the power button until the power light goes out. You can *just* see it past your finger, if you're careful. Then, turn the machine back on and it should/might boot normally.

So, try the long power button push first. If this fails, try the BIOS reflash from a USB stick, as documented elsewhere.

My A150 V3301 is almost a month old and experienced the black screen failure for the first time this morning. It had been in hibernate mode and when it restarted I had the usual problem of loss of sync with a connected USB hard drive so I rebooted and went to get my coffee from the kitchen & came back to the black screen.

After trying just a hard reset with no joy, I did the 3305 blind flash procedure as detailed on the Macles site and that fixed it (though I'm not certain it really flashed in a new bios, some here report it does not, but just recovers the installed version). Either way me happy for now, I had partially completed work on the AAO that needs to be done today. Later when I have more time I'll look and see what BIOS version is really there. The box says my computer had 3301 and I have never investigated further.

I think the Fn/Esc/PwrBtn routine is supposed to be a "crisis fail" fix that's supposed to work without the BIOS file & FLASHIT.EXE on a connected USB drive. May be wrong about that, but the release notes on 3305 reference something about fixing "crisis fail" so we'll see.

It is obvious there are serious BIOS related issues with this little computer, and I hopefully regard it a work in progress that will soon be cleaned up. Insyde Software claims their H2O product is the greatest thing since sliced bread yet they can't spell.

On edit, I did check this evening after I got my work done and the flash procedure from Macles DID NOT upgrade the BIOS, it is still 3301. If I get the black screen again I'll do the proper upgrade flash after I do the recovery flash.

Mines dead too. I have tried the blind bios flash trick but nothing has changed.
I have tried 3114, 3304, 3305 on 3 different usb sticks and it just flashes the power light at me.

    Is it completely dead?
Advice or suggestions welcome, I'm getting desperate now

did you do any modifications prior to bios flash? Acer Tech Support warned me when I try to upgrade the bios by myself. much better if you just send it to their service center....

I had the black screen (dead) problem on the first day. No mods, but my USB thumb drive was plugged-in.

Macles' procedure did not work on my PC for some reason. So I figured that I would press different key combinations in the hope that something would wake up the dead BIOS.

Can't remember if it was holding F2 or ESC before turning the machine on, but it worked. The One went straight to the BIOS setup.

My One hasn't had problems since (over 4 weeks ago). However I am making sure not to EVER shut down my PC while something is connected to USB.

    My bios is 3114 BTW...
