OK. I have the 8GB linux version. It starts to boot, blue acer screen flashes up, screen goes black then mouse pointer appears. Then... nothing. You can move the mouse pointer around, but nothing else.

Have flashed Bios V3307; no change, so tried V3305, still the same.

    Help! Any ideas?

You might need to reload Linux.
The issue as I understand it is the Laptop gets Bricked. What your describing is not quite the same issue.

I have my aa1 just one day and it died on me. I was trying to boot of an usb harddrive while it just stopped working.
It didn't reboot afterwards, so I tried the macles method which didn't work

    1. Used 3 different USB sticks
    2. Used different USB Ports
    3. Used different firmware
    4. Renamed the Firmware into all possible variations of ZG5IA32.FD (ZG5_IA32.FD, zg5ia32.fd....)
    5. Installed Freedos with netbootin...

It doesn't read the usb stick as I conclude since the led of the usb stick doesn't flash. It only does that when switching on for just a milisecond.

Does anybody know what I am doing wrong?

    Hello,

I will add in here my problems with the Acer Aspire One. I brought one for myself about three months ago, and one for my son two months ago. Well a week ago my son's one, crasshed ie was DEAD. Then while I was in the process of arranging for my son's one to be repaired, mine of course went dead. Luckely for me, I was able to get the last message from Acer support re my son's machine, so I know how to package it and the numbe to use when it is picked up and returned for repair.

Both of these machine were made in 2007. I am gathering there is a problem with the machine made in 2007, it is a bit shame that they were put into the market and sold.

Here's hoping that I don't have to go through too many more frustrations re arranging for my machine to be picked up for repairs. Sometimes the people on the support desk are not easy to get messages across to,

Oh the instructions I was given, take out the battery, unplug everthing, presss the on/off switch for ten seconds, then wait a quarter of an hour, place the battery back in, hook up the mains lead and then turn the mains on at the power point. I can't see what this does for the machine. Does anyone know?

    Regards,

    JennyWren

Just a follow up to the post I made a page back - I've been meaning to make this post but I have been busy - so here it goes:

Acer received my laptop on the 14th. I personally delivered it to them at the service center in Canada. That location had a "warehouse" appearance and the room where people come and go to drop off/pick up their stuff was very small with no windows. The staff was friendly but could not be any more accomodating than what Acer's policies state - first come, first serve basis.

They fixed my One on the 19th and it was shipped via FedEx in a huge box with plenty of air bag padding to my house on the 20th. Overall, a 6-day turnaround time. They could not restore my BIOS but instead opted to replace the entire mainboard with a completely new one surprisingly. I left a note to the technician not to erase my hard drive under any circumstances so when I turned it on, it was pleasant to see none of my stuff had been erased or touched at all.

Overall, the experience was smooth and without hassle in getting my Aspire One repaired. I know my good experience with Acer isn't something everyone gets but it got my One fixed and if nothing has worked for you, chances are they'll make it good. Unfortunately, despite the complete replacement of the mainboard, I still can't trust my Aspire One anymore when something as bad as a BIOS wipe can occur in the middle of final exams season. This is not the fault of customer service but of product quality. I have moved on and upgraded to the Asus N10.

I am another Macles saved AOA.

Mine bricked after hibernation. I flashed 3307 per Macles and am running again

I did however notice that my bios and cpu-z both report my bios as the original 3114. Is this normal?

Well holy crap! This is my second AAO - the first one had the 60second shutdown problem which was resolved by taking the AAO back to John Lewis and getting a refund as they had no others in stock. I got this one from Currys and being as I used to work for the DSGi (before they became DSGi) I know their aftersales is crap. I was preparing myself for a long wait while their techs debated over the problems I have had, when I decided to log in here and see if it had been brought up before.

Macles has been absolutely invaluable for many things (not least helping me use the Linpus OS in advanced mode and plenty of other stuff, all on my g/f's AAO - mine's been XP'd) and this time has absolutely excelled! I'd just finished reconfigging the AAO after wiping and reinstalling everything - did a few MS Office updates and rebooted to continue the install. It died. Black screen, power light, unable to turn off, etc etc. Formatted my trusty Sony USB stick and installed the 3307 BIOS - it's now booting!

Thanks again to Macles, and of course to this wonderful forum.

PeteGraham, does your BIOS read 3307? I've flashed mine twice and it sill shows the original 3114.

Mine died after two weeks of use. I tried every procedure, but witout any result. It's not reading from the uSB drive to do the bios-update, tried USB stick, on all the ports.
I have a black screen, and only the power led lit. Macles procedure is no good for my machine.
Oh, its an original 120GB HDD, 1GB ram, Linplus system. No modifications !
I'm using a 4GB Cruzer usb mem-stick to try and recover my AA1, everybodyelse succeeds, and mine is not willing to load the new Bios !!!

for the people who sent it in for repair, did you guys have to pay for your shipping or did acer send you a box with prepaid shipping? I processed my broken aspire one through their website and the instructions state i have to ship it to them in a box at my expense. Im hoping that they reimburse me.

I Sent mine in for repair it got the Black Screen of Death after 3 weeks. They didnt offer to cover the shipping so i dought they will cover shipping to them maybe if you talk to a supervisor or something. I sent it USPS and insurance ($350) was the expensive part. The total was $10 to ship and insurance was half. They followed macles crisis recovery to the T so they are maybe learning from this forum. It would save everybody time and money to send us a USB crisis recovery key and have tech support help us over the phone. But hopefully it wont happen again cross my fingers

yes acer should try sending usb keys with bios recovery on them seen usb key 512mb for like $3.99 a wile back so it would be cheaper that's for sure and faster :D

getting my aspire one back in the mail to day hope they didn't format to hd have a 3 week old backup but I installed a lot of stuff and edited registry for the best performance as well had 26 processes on start up be for there was 42 on start up

All the new programs out there drive me nuts they all have to have a speed start or auto updater on start up ect...
slowing the computer down on start up :x

When fedex gets my aspire one here I will post what bios is on it and if they formatted my hd
also ill find out if they changed the main board cause ill be putting back my 1gb stick my
acer was perfect for 2 months with 1.5gb ram

I left a usb stick in it that day I had my psp connected as well and it bricked

I was really careful changing my ram and taking it out they probably never noticed I had it apart
and it was all video taped put it on youtube

I got my Acer aspire one back from the repair depot today whoever took it apart did not know what they were doing.

Many of the screws were finger tight also rubber feet were not in the right place I tried to peel them off and put them back
but the two-way tape got damaged also some of the screws were a little bit stripped on the back under the battery compartment.

According to the paperwork they changed the motherboard and updated the BIOS
the fan no longer makes a grinding sound any more when the laptop is not heated up.

When I powered up my Acer aspire one I was glad to see they did not format my hard drive.

The BIOS version is 0.3305 05/09/2008

Due to how poorly the laptop was put together I decided to add my 1 GB stick and memory right away
and found many screws inside the notebook just as loose as the ones on the bottom.

I now have it reassembled with 1.5 GB of memory and its passing prime 95 torture test with no errors
the fan is still whiny and loud but no longer makes grinding noises which is good.

Would anybody suggest updating my BIOS with a newer version or should I just leave it where it is at 0.3305
as I really do not want my Acer to brick again.

So far everything is working properly on my netbook
and I hope not to have any more problems with it in the future.

This is the first laptop I've ever had stopped working on me.

I just got my AAO less than two weeks ago and have the same BIOS version and date. It's working like a champ (I'm on it almost 24/7 :) ). If you just got it back from them, they must have selected the version that they thought best at the time. Of course, the shoddy repair work makes one wonder if it was just a kid using Google to locate and install it. It's disappointing just to read about your experience.

I also had a "black screen" Aspireone however i did not upgrade the RAM. do you manage to see the logo when you boot at least ?

If not, probably very difficult to recover.

If the logo appears, there is still something you can do to make your machine boot.
