I think you may have hit on the problem that causes this.
This is exactly what happened before my machine died.

I'm just about to reflash with 3308.
Since this is the highest number not 3114, so I assume that this is the latest BIOS.

Reflashing the BIOS restores the machine to life!!
    Thanks Macles.

    However the screen was borked!!
It is now square and split.
I've rebooted USB drive with 3114 BIOS and that makes no difference.

I have all my apps but the screen sizing is screwed.
Cant decide if it is hardware or software.
I think it must be BIOS derived as even the boot up Acer screen logo is the same.

    Any suggestions.
    I'm restoring as I write.

    Fixed the screen sizing problem.
It was the screen connector had not pushed back as far as it should and was so not connecting correctly.

I am now fully restored to working with BIOS 3109.
I'll wait for 3115 as and when it comes as the 3114 seems to be unstable.

ReIt looks like you can add one more to the list...

My 160 gb 6-cell just died after less than 3 months of use. It shut down and will not come up with batter or on direct power. The power light and on/off lights come on, the fan whirs and the machine will not boot up. Acer Support online will not recognize my Serial Number and the phone service center is not available on weekends... I guess I can kiss the files and emails from my last week on the road goodbye, huh?

    I am so disappointed!

I had the same problem registering my acer at first. make sure you go through the American website to register it. Should work just fine then.

My One was originally on linpus but got on my nerves so tried Ubuntu then tonight thought I would try it with XP. Changed the boot setting to boot from external CD Drive, then got the black screen, whirring fan, nothing else. Refuses to even switch off!! I think it is now dead. Going to try the leaving it off overnight with no battery to see what happens then probably have to try my luck at returning it to Comet. Will the fact I removed the original operating system make my warranty void?

YIPEE!!! Did the Macles BIOS flash. Didn't bother with the bit for bootable USB, just formatted it on my PC to FAT then followed the instrucitons for downloading the most recent BIOS then flashed it and it worked a treat.

Going to put Linpus back I think and leave it like that for the time being.

Just wondering, those that sent it in, did they just replace the part, send you a refurb, or send a new AAO?

    Hi all

Same thing happened to me a few months back in Thailand - was on a round the world trip and had brought the A1 to save on weight and space. Got no help from the one line services, but took it into a service centre in Bangkok (which was a mission in itself) where they flashed the bios and the issue was resolved. They wouldn't really go into detail as to the reason why the there was problem with the bios, it may have been language or a reluctance to disclose, but they did intimate that this is a common problem.

My new Aspire One A110 (linux) AC adapter died after two days. The netbook worked as long as the battery had power. I sent in the AC adapter for replacement and ordered a travel charger at the same time...

Got the travel charger today, plugged it in and...the led indicating external power flashed once, then went black. The power on button doesn't power the unit on. It seems like the initial AC adapter broke and took the MB at the same time, but only circuits related to external power input...

I now have to send the netbook in for repair and another week or two will pass before I can use my A110... :(

I think i'm going to send my Aspire back any way as have had problems with the wifi and the battery leaked (and left my usb stick at my parents house) but thought I'd post that i had the same issue as tringa. A0A110, BIOS v0.3109 running linpus, no mods. When trying to boot, you get the Acer screen (you can get to the boot menu at this stage), then you get the blue Acer Aspire 1 screen, then black screen then the cursor appears. you can move the curser around and the Caps Lock light can be turned on and off but nothing else. This happened after just closing the netbook one night.

Acer warranty people seemed pretty good about this and said they wouldn't need the receipt or anything (I've had it three months+ and had lost the receipt) so I assume they've had this problem a lot.

Ho hum, just my two pennies worth

gah! tried macles' process, had to prepare the USB on my dad's pc, could only format it as FAT32 - does this make a difference. Anyway, plugged it into the AA1 and all seemed to go well, the power LED blinked at all the right times as described in the instructions then went off, then the machine tried to reboot and the same thing happened as before, Acer screen then blue Aspire 1 screen then black screen (alhough fan seemed to get louder) then mouse pointer appears then nowt :-(

That's not the issue the macles solution fixes. With the BIOS crisis fail you'll just get a black screen and all lights off except the power LED. There would be no activity on the screen whatsoever.

Sounds to me like you are getting a hang while trying to load the OS - and how you fix that depends on what your OS is.

I did hear this mentioned before but people still seemed to think the BIOS recovery would fix it *puzzled* I would like to point out that while i get the black screen and pointer, the hard drive led occaionally flickers and the fan runs and Caps Lock can be turned on.

    I'm running Linpus

Had to send it to service center less than 2 months after purchase. It was returned to me after one month,
with "changed bios" on the report sheet...
now it works again... but... I lost confidence.

    umm... i have a question..
if my AAO only show the power led w/o anything else showing.. can't see bio or anything.. does that mean my AAO is dead? should i try the bio flash?
