I wanted to call up tech support here (Malaysia), but Acer subcontracts that to another company so it's hard to get them to care.

I may have a word with them when I go down there to pick up a 6 cell battery..

I think someone in the US or Taiwan should try - go direct to the source so to speak, and put some pressure for a BIOS update

Update: After days of extensive use with the downgraded bios 3109 and tinyXP my AAO (upgraded RAM) runs without problems and still alive. The earlier mentioned higher temperatures occurs only when I'm connected to AC power. It seems the dead AAO was due to the bios 3114. SO don't upgrade to 3114.

I sent some tips out to the media, Its stupid Acer hasn't taken official measure to acknowledge and fix the issue for millions of users since this can be potential very wide spread.

I had a blank screen this morning, but reboot fixed it, I backed up all my stuff, and ready to flush the BIOS if needed in the future. But this severely limited AA1 as my main computer, and with 120G HDD, its a huge waste if I can't use it as I want.

Acer needs to pay more attention to their quality control, otherwise, lenovo and Dell might be my only choice next time.

    Hi everyone,

Just wanted to say that my little aspire has died with the dreaded black screen. The main differences appear to be that I'm running Linpus (8 Gb, 512Mb, no mods etc...straight from the box!) and have the original 3109 bios. Don't see why I should go through the whole rigmarole of reflashing etc so it's going back to the seller tonight. :(

Couldn't agree more. I have been speculating for some time as to why Dell (and for that matter the Japanese have been slow into getting into this market segment. Whilst this could partly be because of supply chain issues I am increasingly wondering if the fact that the Atom is a very buggy chip might also be a factor and they will hold off until Intel have sorted this out.

Also strikes me that this makes the case for having the SSD version! At least there is less stuff to back up!

I cannot help but think that we are partly to blame for Acer's lack of response...if we stop trying to find fixes and just send the machines back then they would soon get the message, as it is all we are doing is their job for them.

I wouldn't worry too much. Probably on a small percentage of AA1 users are even aware of this forum. I think this forum has about 4000 members and although I am sure that there are many lurkers there will still be many people out there who are not I read somewhere that this category of computer was expected to sell around 10M pieces in 2008. Acer is a main player and might not yet match Asus in terms of numbers but one would expect them to have the ambition of selling say 1 to 3 million this year. This implies a run rate of the order of hundreds of thousands per month (although I am sure they are still ramping up) so the problems reported on this forum really are "the tip of the iceberg".

I have been wondering how to contact someone directly at Acer. A frustration is that they do not have anyone that it is possible to talk to that is sufficiently knowledgeable. The discussions that I have had with their help line have been a joke as the technical people really don't have the knowledge to provide answers. The Acer website doesn't give the names or e-mail addresses of anyone that is of a senior enough level to take action. I tried e-mailing their general support but but their only suggestion was that I should reinstall Linux! Since then I have sent off further e-mails over the last week or so but have not received any reply and my guess is that they are simply ignoring this issue.

I really want to recommend the AAO to my friends and such but this problem is making me think twice. I made a USB recovery stick that I keep with the AAO just in case it craps out on me when on a trip. It hasn't yet.

I wonder if Acer is aware of this problem. They probably are and not doing anything until it becomes a bigger issue. Think of all the people who sent in their ONE to get fixed, waiting weeks, when it was just a simple bios flash to fix.

Feel the same way. I bought mine about 3 weeks ago. Apart from wanting a new gadget to play with a motivation was that we are going on a 3 week trip to the UK in about 10 days time. I bought it thinking it would be a great way of being able to hook up to the internet via a 3G stick but also that we could take some photos and videos to show relatives and friends. Now my ONE is still at the repair shop and even if it returns on time I will feel almost embarrased to show it off in public.

I just want to say that two AAO have died with the “black screen bug” for me so far…
One was 3109 and one was 3114. I had done the 1GB memory upgrade on both.

I have not read the entire topic but do not forget that you can make a USB stick with the 3114 firmware and use that to reflash a dead aspire. I got mine back to life this evening and am now finishing my xp installation on my 110!

Just to make sure: does this thing only happen when you reboot without turning it off first?

My A150 died tonight after two days. The machine came with v.3114. The recovery procedure outlined in this thread brought it back to life. The machine died after I leaving the BIOS having changed the boot order to USB disk first. I've been trying out several linux usb distros.

With luck the good folks at Acer are monitoring the forum and will produce a new BIOS soon which will rid us of this problem.

FYI ... I have not reflashed back to .3109 yet. I'll report back if/when it dies again with v.3114.

So, got the new one and opened it up this morning...surprise, surprise...exactly the same problem. The spec is the same and the Bios is 3109 and the dreaded black screen is there again.

This one's going back and this time I intend to get my money back, if Acer aren't interested in this problem there is no way I'm going to act as their test and quality department.

    good luck guys
