    Hi,
I do apologize, however I have been trying to get rid of the default desktop with the help of http://jorge.ulver.no/2008/08/06/acer-a ... ktop-icons,
however, he does not explain how one opens shell script files (with the terminal?),
just come off of windows, so I'm a little confused.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? cheers!

    EDIT:,
I seem to be able to open them with open office, however read only..

The built in editor is called mousepad - in terminal type mousepad followed by the path and filename to edit. A lot of the files he'll be telling you to edit require root access to write to, so type sudo in front of the above. Example: sudo mousepad /directory/otherdirectory/filename.ext

Ah now that makes more sense.
Thank you, now before I start meddling with my desktop are there any safety tips I should follow? (back up everything?)
I haven't created a rescue CD yet, is it necessary or should I just proceed?

    Thanks

It's always a good idea to back up your system before meddling with it, especially if you've spent some time customizing it! And I should be more dilligent about following my own advice. My personal recommendation would be a live USB stick with partimage (check out System Rescue CD http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page) that can store a compressed filesystem image. A standard Linpus install with will fit nicely on a 4GB stick.
