Dial Up Connection

Hi, I have an Aspire One Linux version.
What I would like to set up is a cheap dial-up modem for use abroad (we have a place in spain which we visit regularly that cannot get broadband but has a slow landline).

Can I easily get an old external dial up modem working (I have a couple of old non USB modems kicking about).

I have already seen a few examples of cheap dial-up software that supports UK and Spanish numbers, but it is the connection and configuration of the hardware that I am not sure about.

I realise that it will be slow but we will only be using email etc and not downloading anything big.

This is not as easy as one would expect.
Afaik there is no serial port on the one.
Then there are usb-serial converters, but they will not work out-of-the-box.

Wow Japser that looks like a mighty job, hours of endless fun!
Surely there must be a simpler way to essentially just plug into a phone line?

Maybe it looks more intimidating than it is, it involves putting one missing file in place and running one simple command.
