    thanks for that info, eses. for anyone downloading the Recovery DVD, just remember... the main reason I created this image was because the Recovery DVD erases your entire disk and then installs Linpus on a partition that takes up the whole hard drive. The image I've posted allows you to create a Linpus partition without the aforementioned issues.

    Hi all, now I'm a relative newbie to all this aspire one stuff but have been a windows modder (usually just fixing other peoples screwed up pc's lol) for a long time. I have noticed that there is a copy of "Ron's Tiny xp image" floating around the net which is condensed and has the fan mods to take out all the tripe and make it faster etc (LINKY HERE) and I was wondering if that image could be used as there should be no issues with drivers etc. The only problem is that his blog seems to be about just putting on one OS whereas I want my linpus there as well.
    Also there is a youtube vid HERE which uses a multiboot prog from http://www.boot-land.net which cures the hal.dll problem by letting you change the options when finally booting.
    I hope this may be of use to someone on here. Now I just need to summon up enough bottle to wipe my linux install. lol :)

    I just wanted to say thanks. Because of this guide I have a fully functional XP/Linpus box. Bootloader never worked for me, but the WinGRUB option delivered.

    The only weird thing that happened latter was that Linpus said that it was in a 3.98 GB partition when I had it in a 10 GB partition, but I managed to fix that easily.

    Now I only need to find out how can I make Linpus see my other partitions and everything will be superb!

    Thanks again.

    Hi guys,
    I had some weird issues with the people that host my site and they deleted all the files I had in my public ftp directory. Long story short, they can't help me and recommend that I restore from backup. Nice. I luckily have the largest file (the image), but I can't find this one. Anyone have it (or willing to recreate it)? I'd recreate the archive but I'm running OS X / Windows 7 on the laptop right now and it'd be kind of a hassle to restore the image just to get my hands on the files.

    The files included were:

    bzImage
    grub.conf
    initrd-splash.img
    splash.xmp.gz

    Also, in the guide there was a file called Primary_Logical.png.

    Anyway, for anyone that had tried to download the image and got a "File Not Found - 404" error, I appologize. I hadn't realized this had happened until I read a comment someone posted on my site. I'm re-upping the image as we speak. Unfortunately, I recently downgraded to a much slower broadband upload speed, so... it'll take at least another 4 hours. Should be ready by morning at the latest.

    Thanks in advance!

    -M

    Hi, I'm trying to do this dual booting with xp and linpus but I ran intro a problem.

    I tried to set up the partitions using acronis (ntfs, then 1.5 sqap, then 3.99 ext2) I rebooted to confirm the changes and now my AAO won't boot, after the first acer splash screen it goes to an all black screen with a cursor on the first space.

    can somebody help me?

    thanks in advance

    sounds like its attempting to boot from a partition that has no bootloader, like the swap partition. i'd try and install wingrub and have it boot from the first partition. or to get yourself started quickly, if you have access to a windows setup cd, boot from it and go into the recovery console. from there, you should be able to do a fixmbr and/or fixboot. this will NOT get you going with linpus. for that you'll have to follow the other guides.

    how can I install wingrub, doesn't it have to be installed FROM windows? I don't have an external cd drive, so I'm trying to make my xp cd bootable from a usb, still no luck (I ran into trouble even in that step)

    sorry, you're right. i haven't used wingrub yet so i didn't realize you have to edit boot.ini. just looked over the instructions here:

    http://users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/p9.html

    anyway, you need to repair your mbr. that is the most likely issue. why can't you boot from the windows xp setup? what error are you getting? also, if you created a backup using acronis, it would have backed up the mbr (master boot record) too. acronis give you the option of just restoring the mbr or restoring the entire partition.

    here's a utility i've used in the past. i hope it works for you. let us know.

    I managed to reinstall windows xp in the partition I previously made using acronis, but that partition wasn't recognizable, perhaps acronis failed in the process. Right now I already have a working windows xp and will follow the rest of the steps, I'll be using gparted for the partitions.

    thanks a lot for your help so far

    glad to hear it. i kind of want to load linpus back on my acer, but i have os x running pretty well on it and it's a pain to re-partition os x. you'd think it'd be easier seeing as their both unix-y, but... it doesn't work that way. the mac os file system is a pain in the rear.

    now if swapping the hard drive out was easier, that might be an option too, but of course it is way more difficult than it ought to be. oh well...

    Anybody tried to install a dual boot system with XP and Linpus on the AA1 with the 8gb ssd? Is that doable, and is there a guide somewhere?

    Cheers.

    Yes! I have a A110 8GB SSD (1,5 Gb Ram & 16GB SD-ram). The Dual boot works out great! Installed XP first, from there used partion Magic to format the SSD disk to:

    Ext2 (linpus) - 4 GB
    Swap - 0.5GB
    Fat32 (Win Xp)- 3.5GB

    And then followed the guide, Thanks for this!!

    But I will try to erase the swap partion and merge it with the fat32... Any comment about this?

    My menu.lst looks like this;
    ---------
    default=0
    timeout=0
    splashimage=(hd0,2)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
    hiddenmenu

    title Linpus Linux RCD
    rootnoverify (hd0,2)

    kernel /boot/bzImage ro root=LABEL=linpus vga=0x311 splash=silent
    loglevel=1 console=tty1 quiet nolapic_timer nolapic_timer elevator=noop
    initrd /boot/initrd-splash.img
    ---------------

    The Dual Boot works out great as said, but I have one question. In the Guide it says:
    "edit menu.lst file to point sda (partition name +1)"

    Where should I add this line for SDA, or is it just something for the ordinary hard disk drive (not SSD)?

    Following the instructions here I have a dual boot setup. But now Linpus wants to update. My question is should I let it update? I believe the Linpus image I used was the original one posted here.

    Thanks

    Mercado79,

    Hi, remember me? I was the first one to respond to you way back in September 08 when you first posted this. I am sorry to say that I could not figure out how you did it because I was not familiar with the .img format. I am now, though.

    I finally...FINALLY, have a dual booting Linpus/XP AAO. I did it by following the "Idiots Guide" in the thread above us. If you remember I said the only reason I would use windows anyway is for my Canon MP21 printer/scanner. Well, I wrote a letter to Canon back then saying that they needed to provide linux drivers for the then new printer I bought. I was given a polite email response telling me "thanks, but no plans for making linux drivers.

    Lo and behold, I get my system dual booting and guess what? Canon now has Linux Drivers..the jerks!. ha.

    Anyway, I want to thank you for your help and tell you what a long, strange journey this has been. Now I need to get re-acquainted with Linpus again!

    Thanks,

    Lance
