    Hi Friends,
I just realized that you can buy bootable USB-Sticks, 8 GB for about 20 Euros in Germany or Austria or any other country in Europe. saves you the trouble, unless you are a masochist, go and get it....

Ok, I figured it out on mine...

These instructions are for the HP Mini-Note so we will have to tweak them a little to get them to work on our Aspire One.

Under the section, "Installing XP on the Mini-note", skip down to number 9 and follow it's directions (you will have to boot using the GUI option).

Now, there are 10 steps under #9 to edit your boot.ini file...replace those 10 steps with these 8 steps:

    1. Click on Start and open My Computer
    2. Manually copy these three files FROM the USB drive (in my case, drive C) TO the Local Disk drive (drive D on mine):
"boot.ini", "ntdetect.com", "ntldr". Put them in the root folder, don't make a seperate one for them.
    3. Close the My Computer window
    4. Physically remove the USB drive from your aspire one
    5. Now, open My computer again and you should only see the Local Disk icon and not your USB drive...important!
    6. Double-click on the Local Disk icon and then double-click on the boot.ini file
Note: You won't be able to use msconfig and sysdm.cpl to change the boot.ini because the registry is still looking at drive C which you pulled out when you pulled out the USB drive.
Note: You are now editing the boot.ini file on your hard drive and NOT on the USB drive. Windows marks the USB drive as bootable and reads the boot.ini file off of it. We were actually editting the boot.ini on the USB drive! Once you take it out then Windows doesn't physially have one on the hard drive to find and that's why it wouldn't boot.

    7. Only change the "rdisk(1)" part to "rdisk(0)"...do not change the text to "Windows XP Pro". I used rdisk(0) many times but I always changed the text. I got tired of changing it that last time and that's when it worked!
THIS IS MY WORKING BOOT.INI FILE: There should NOT be a carriage return between "Start" and "XP".
    [Boot Loader]
    Timeout=10
    Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="2. GUI Mode Setup Windows XP, Continue Setup + Start XP" /FASTDETECT

    8. Save the file, keep the USB drive out, and reboot

    I hope this helps everyone...

I've downloaded the "eeepc-ppack-winxp.zip" pack to install WIN XP on my AAO 110 (8GB - 512 Mb ram)

I did every step as the "how to" tell me to do (i've installed win XP... FIVE TIMES) tryin BOOT.INI to work....

THEN I READ THIS FAQ, it comes with every pack for installing WIN XP via USB sticks:

    i found on "pre-packed" > "usb_prep8" > "Help_indo" > "HELP_USB_PREP.TXT"

As everyone can see, in the bold part, that's the way to get the right letters for the devices!!

    i've try, and IT WORKS.

SO, CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW CORRECT THE BOOT.INI doc in order to restart my AAO without the pen drive!!!!

I don't wanna re-install anymore, just for a bad typping on that doc! hahahaha

HEY! this thing solve all the problems! I can start WIN XP without touching any more!

    SO here are the steps:

1- prepare the USB stick (pen drive) as the guides says...
2- when you put the pen drive in the AAO, start with it, and begin the instalation
3- you have to delete ALL the partitions and create just ONE whit the whole disk space. I used FAT32 format. (i'm assuming that everyone have an SSD hard drive yet in the AAO)
4- start the instalation in TXT mode ONCE
5- the machine reboots, then you selet to install TXT MODE AGAIN (ths is where somehow the drive letters are corrected)
5- when the machine reboot again, now select GUI MODE, and the normal instalation resume...
6- the computer reboot, you are now in the desktop of win XP, open MY COMPUTER, and see that the hard disc is "C" drive!
7- restart, put out the pen drive.... then show the selector of system to restart: select the first. VOILA!

experienced users, tell us how to skip this selector please, i'm tyred... my AAO works al last with XP, and works SMOOTH! even with 512 ram

Do you mean the boot menu for XP? Go to control panel -> system -> Advanced -> Startup and recovery -> either set to 0 or uncheck the option for the time to display list of operating systems
