Interesting that they include VLC as this is NOT in the http://www.acer.com/aspireone/.. area!

Do you know the version numbers ?

On acer.com they are listed as:
    FileZilla 3.1.2
    Skype 2.0
    Gimp 2.4.0-rc3
    Egoboo 2.4.3
    Gnomebaker: 0.6.2
    Unison 2.13.15
    (No VLC)

I had already installed from their home sites:
    Skype 2.0.0.72
    VLC 0.8.6i
    Gimp 2.4.6

VLC media player 0.8.6i Janus (interface wxWidgets)
    (c) 1996-2008 - The Videolan Team
    Compilated by mockbuild@.(none).
    Compilateur : gcc version 4.4.2 20070925 (Red Hat 4.1.2 - 33).

The install file is quite big , 28.5 MO .
    Works fine .

    Gimp is 2.4.5
Opens much faster than the windows version I have on another comp.
    I didn't try the others.

    Interesting:
The Gimp versions don't match on the 2 sites and are both behind the current release.
VLC seems to be the latest version.
I wonder if Acer have done any optimizations to ensure dialog boxes fit on the screen (eg Gimp)
or to remove an apparent audio clipping problem in VLC?

At this point I am passing on the live update route due to the issues that people have encountered. These offers by acer require a certain level of live update to be able to double click the file and have it install.

Any advice on how to install GIMP would be greatly appreciated without going through the live update route.

    thanks

Apparently the rumour is that the vlc installed using acers script doesn't work with all codecs. Whilst the one from the Livna repositries does.
Can anyone confirm this? Has anyone tried Acers Vlc with xvid/divx or H264 video?.

Found this as a comment on Macles blog by a guy called Simon.

The only comment about the instructions I would make is that vi is not very user friendly, I would use
    Code:
    mousepad install.sh
instead, then remove the line 3 from the bottom that Simon mentions and then save the file and exit mousepad.
Then back in the terminal window
    Code:
    ./install.sh

Still no VLC, I don't know what I did, but I can't get VLC installed no matter WHAT I do...
This is confusing to say the least.

Hmm I wonder if you have installed it but not got the launch Icon on the desktop.

Have you tried Alt + F2 to open the Run Applicactions dialog then type vlc and click on run

I confirm Xvid codec couldn't play.
I had to reinstall with the yum method.
    Sorry for confusing.
