Just for fun, I tried the Elive Development version on the 160 GB HD version of the AA1. It runs quite nicely--I downloaded the ISO and used unetbootin to make a bootable USB. One of the options in the boot menu was for the eee pc version. Choosing that, it ran quite well, wireless and sound detected out of the box. I then installed it. Configuration options after installation take too long, but it's the development version. After it was installed, it seems to run quite nicely. However, its GUI network tool wasn't able to connect with wireless, though using wpa_supplicant manually connected without problem. Anyway, for those who like the Enlightenment Desktop, it's worth a look.
If you like the enlightenment desktop with ubuntu you can try the geubuntu for eee. http://opengeu.intilinux.com/News/Voci/2008/9/16_OpenGeeeU_8.04.1_Live_CD_for_EeePC_released.html Works very fast out of the box.
