I thought I'd post a few links to How-Tos and pics of my Acer One running the Enlightenment (e17) Desktop.

    I did mine by:

    1. Installing Xubuntu 8.04.1 via the How-To here >>>> https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne (changing Ubuntu to Xubuntu and using mousepad, not gedit, to change config files)

    2. Installing the OzOS version of the e17 desktop (based on the easy_e17 script that installs the very last versions from the cvs and having some neat extra utilities to help maintain - and rescue if necessary - your e17) using this How-To >>>>> http://cafelinux.org/OzOs/content/how-i ... xisting-os

This way, you get "Enlightenment" as a session option along with Xfce and all the installed apps and OzOS extras are immediately available via e17 menus

WARNING - if you haven't messed with e17 before, it is a very different desktop to Gnome or KDE or Xfce and will certainly take a little getting used to. It is light and fast and endlessly configurable - but not via the ways you are used to. There are other How-Tos here if you are interested in learning the e17-ropes >>>> http://cafelinux.org/OzOs/content/how-index

OzOS does come as a stand-alone liveCD distro but right now the version available is based on Xubuntu 8.04 and will not boot on the Atom. The final release of Version 1 is not far away and I'm sure that the 32 bit version will be based on 8.04.1. There's not a lot of a performance hit anyway if you go with Xubuntu first and just add the OzOS version of e17.

Please note - there are other ways to install an e17 desktop over Ubuntu (or any other Debian-based distro). If you don't like the idea of being on the bleeding edge with the cvs, I'd recommend the precompiled version of e17 in the Debian testing repos rather than any other (the Ubuntu one is quite shockingly out of date). I don't think any of the up-to-date distros that have e17 by default (Maryan Linux or OpenGeu) are currently available with right kernel to install directly.

If you decide to try this and need any help, ask here or in the OzOS forums at http://www.cafelinux.org/forum/

    Here's my desktop (clean):

And with the e17 menu expanded:

The theme is one I made specifically for the AA1 and other netbooks. It is available from here >>>> http://cafelinux.org/OzOs/content/enlig ... hemes-ozos

Nope - wicd. It's not native to e but also doesn't require lots of other stuff installed. Works a treat.

Ok! Ive found a solution for myself... I downloaded qemu and made a Linpus Dev machine! So now I can download and build from E17 SVN and then move the build over to the laptop. Its a fairly easy process... the Recovery DVD has Linpus on it so it just a straight forward install, configure, build. I think ill use this as a *tinker* machine aswell. :ugeek:

Might even make a tar.gz of it!

Which uses more memory, Linpus running XFCE or Xubuntu running E17?
