Bought An Aspire One for my daughter as she is going to Africa and needs to keep in touch.
Have downloaded all the updates via live Update but can't log on to MSN. Don't even get an error message!
Spoke to Acer Tech. Support. They say there's nothing wrong with their software and are blaming my router - a DLink GSL-G624T. I have removed security from the router, but to no avail.

    HELP PLEASE!

Not even getting an error message is certainly odd. Can you start a terminal (use My Files, then File->Terminal from the menus) and type in "UIM" then hit Enter?

This will start the Messenger software from the terminal, and it is likely to report much more detailed error information to the terminal than it would otherwise. If you then copy the output from the terminal into a post here, more help may well be possible!.

Can you connect to anything else on the network? The error there seems to indicate that the network is actually not available to you.

Thanks, will do. Probably won't be until Friday night though because there's no wi-fi where I am now. Hope you're online then as I've been tearing my hair out!

    Me again!

Managed to get a wired connection and now miraculously Messenger works! Wouldn't work on a DLink wireless connection though, even though I could get online with the browser and email. Any ideas why the Dlink was blocking Messenger access?

I just ditched my DLink wireless router/modem because neither my Aspire One nor my EeePC would connect reliably to it. It did appear that the EeePC with the original (Xandros?) Linux was connecting more reliably before I replaced it with ubuntu-eee, but that may just be a coincidence. Since changing over to a Netcomm router, I have not experienced any problems.

I get the impression that the DLink router is not particularly well regarded by others. Do you have the same problems with different types of encryption?
