Since they are external then they all should work. I have never seen an external CD/DVD drive that would not work with Linux.

I would be interested to know if external CDROMs can be used to boot from on the AAO.
I tried to use a Ubuntu LiveCD but though the CDROM was detected by the BIOS and assigned to boot from - nothing happened with my external CDROM (though fine when running with Ubuntu installed).

I think I read somewhere that the BIOS doesnt support external CDROMs, can anybody shed some light on this? - thanks

EDIT: Hmm ... from further reading it seems that it should boot USB external CDROMs. With reference to the original post, since there was no problem with the Live CD (I used it succesfuly on my other laptop) I assume that there is a problem with the CDROM in which case dont buy this one:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B001GRNM6K - if you want to boot off it.

I test it with Ubuntu and it recognize my external DVD burner. When you install Ubuntu live CD, you must make sure you press F2 I think to access the boot up menu. Then select the DVD rom boot first.

    It's F12 ;)

And stay patient, it may take some time until the external CD/DVD-Burner shows up in the boot menu. Portable drives work, you can burn a DVD even USB-powered, e.g. without an additional power brick. And you can definitely boot from them, also without any external power adapter.
