Any brand will work. I have an old external 3.5" CDROM drive and it works fine with AAO.

Found a really great and CHEAP and TINY dvd-burner with lightscribe and will run off the usb power from the AA1 without the use of the provided power supply. This is the LaCie designed by Sam Hecht. Have installed and used with great success, thus far!

Care to share where you bought that. I'm planning to replace the old 3.5" drive. Thanks.

Sure thing... Found it at JandR Music and Computers. Cost was about $90.

Thanks, I found a better deal actually, $72 (dvd burner) and $57 (a combo i.e cd burner + dvd rom) but haven't make any purchase yet, just trying to look around if I can get a much better deal. ;)

Today I bought a new external slim DVD burner for $61 after scouting around, this is the best deal I think I found so far. The best thing about it, I only use 1 usb connector instead of 2 (the one I tested before). The DVD burner is Hitachi IDE and it support DVDRAM and the enclosure is IBM OEM.

    Three Questions:

    1. Where did you buy the DVD burner for $61?

    2. Does it work with the AA1 running from batteries?

    3. Have you tried booting from a DVD (e.g., the recovery disc) with the AA1 plugged in, or otherwise?

    Thanks.

I have an Apricorn dual layer DVD burner that runs just fine off USB while the AAO is on battery power. I've restored my AAO a couple times with it and used it on both the Linux based SSD models and an XP based model. Both work just fine.

Here's a link to the product at CDW:

I bought myself Panasonic VW-BN1. It is the only slim burner I can find so far around my area. It works great with AAO. The nicest thing is the ability to hook it up with camcorder and burn the disc without using PC.

I bought an LG slim USB powered DVD writer yesterday. It works fine with a single connection to the left USB port on the AAO. Mapping a DVD writer on another machine and another external drive worked fine as well. I just saw a need to have something small to carry in the bag with the AAO. The LG drive was $99 at Fry's.

I looked at that one too but it needs an external power supply which is included. For battery operated field use I wanted something that wouldn't require AC. If that isn't a concern for you the Lite-On looks great.
