Is the problem that your external device does not appear in the boot list when you press F12, or that when you select this device from the F12 menu nothing happens?

Also, how did you install Win 7 on the external drive? Was it installed as an internal IDE or SATA drive in another computer when the Win 7 installation was performed?

on boot up the aspire sees the external HD but will not boot from it, all i have done is copy the whole of the windows setup disc to the HD, so i am trying to use it as a DVD in theory if you know what i mean

That won't work. You either need to burn the Win 7 installation image as a proper DVD and boot from that (using an external DVD drive) or run the installer executable (setup.exe?) from an existing version of Windows.
