I initially installed F11/Gnome on my AA1 and have since groupinstalled XFCE4 but I cannot switch to it - I have installed switchdesk/switchdesk-GUI but even though the command line version confirms I have switched to XFCE4, Gnome still fires up.

    Hayelp!

Has anyone been successful installing F11 Live XFCE? I get a kernel error when trying to start it off a USB stick, but the Live image does run ok from a CD on a desktop machine I have, so I think the image is good. I can successfully install the Gnome F11 Live using the same USB stick so I don't think the stick or the unetbootin process is the problem.

F11 Gnome installs fine but I want the XFCE desktop.

You should be able to select an XFCE session from the GDM screen. Look down at the panel - I believe there's a button labeled "Options" in the lower left corner of the screen; it should let you change the session type from GNOME to XFCE

    RockDoctor,
There's no Options button the the GDM screen. Just Suspend, Restart, and Shut Down on the opening screen. When I select the user, all I get is a Password box with Cancel and Log In buttons. I've never seen an Options button on any of my aao Fedora installs, but I do know I've seen it on some other distros. Seems that I recall something about a "GDM-Lite" version being used on some of the light versions?

My bad. Fedora doesn't give you the option button. And gdm apparently ignores your ~/.Xclients-default file, which is properly set by switchdesk. Seems to be a bug in gdm.

You got me curious, so I looked around a bit and found this: https://fcp.surfsite.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=68855&forum=10. The second post on that page, by Rahul, seems to address the situation.

    RockDoctor,
I looked at the post you referred to. I didn't have a /etc/sysconfig/desktop, so I created it per the post. Now with a reboot I still end up with the Gnome desktop (I did install XFCE desktop first using Package Manager).
I feel stupid having to ask, but what am I missing?
    Thanks,
    Steve

Not sure. I tried switching from GNOME to twm using that advice and had the same results you did.

    Well,

It's working! On the login page I now have a list of available 'sessions' and can select what I want before logging in.

I was not really focusing on fixing the problem so I cannot say what happened although I had recently installed the LXDE desktop too, so I wonder if this also installed the vital bit?!

I was finally able to create a bootable F11 XFCE Live USB stick, so this is no longer an issue for me. I might pursue the ability to choose desktops at boot up though.
Thanks for all the comments and suggestions!
