For unknown reasons, after one month of use, my AAO locked up during boot this morning and gave me the following error message....

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <windows root>\system 32\ntoskrnl.exe Please re-install a copy of the above file"I have shut down and tried to reboot several times to no avail... I get the same message. Any ideas....

    Thanks in advance.

Boot from an XP installation CD and choose "Repair".

Neither did mine. Mine didn't even have XP installed at the factory. Didn't stop me from installing XP though...

If you press F10 (or maybe it's F11) whilst the "F2=Setup, F12=Boot options" prompt is displayed, does this not boot from the factory recovery partition?

Alt-F10 does initiate a system recovery from the factory image, but I lose all settings and data. Is there no other way?

I dare say that there are some XP installation CD images floating about on the 'net, torrents etc.

There are also instructions on this forum on how to make a bootable USB stick with the XP installation CD image.

If you can cobble together a bootable XP installer on a USB stick then you may be able to effect a repair.

Sorry to bump an older post but I have the exact same problem.

I managed to get a bootable USB stick with WinSetupFromUSB tool.
I am able to select "Repair" option when I boot from the USB stick but I can't manage to copy the file to C: because the folders in the sick start with $WINT_NT$.~BT
Would anyone help me on this please?

EDIT: Forgot to mention I have an AOA150

Hmm well I can't manage to get this command correct..

On the repair console I type this:

    EXPAND E:\I386\NTKRNLMP.EX_ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32

and the answer is that the route or file specified isn't valid ?:-(
Also tried with F: G: D: anything, can't figure out what letter is the USB stick
Also tried with NTOSKRNL.EX_ and nothing
What am I doing wrong?? :(
