I have bios version 3114 and with this fan software running the A1 most definitly gets hotter. When I return to stock fan settings, the netbook is much cooler to the feel, particurly the left side. This is why I've decided NOT to run the software at this stage in the game.

I am using XP and 3114 bios and have to say a BIG 'thank you' to Ralf for this piece os software, as it does not only work as expected, it lets you choose how to use it (my setup is fan 'on' at 55ºC).
My One is now less warm and less noisy than before.

at least press F2. so you are in the bios and there is the "System BIOS Version" on the information site.
But if you didn't do any bios update it should be 0.3109.

and aa1 fan control seems to work under the new bios...

    @ ATLien

I know what you mean. the machine gets hoter, definitetly. but I think the hardware can handle this...

Yes, it says 3109. Do you think that the more quiet AA1s have lower fan rpm and that this is due to a BIOS update?

I have ran this software for a few days without any issues other than the following:

In Event Logger, there are these entries every 5 seconds

\Device\ACPIEC: The embedded controller (EC) hardware returned data when none was requested. This may indicate that the BIOS is incorectly trying to access the EC without syncronizing with the OS. The data is being ignored.

This is really more than a nuisance than anything else however using Procmon to monitor any kind of disk write to the Aspire One SSD surfaced this. A fix would be nice

Another issue is the blank space in the popup window for users who do not use the default XP theme. I have an nlighted XP install and don't have that theme installed (I'm sure quite a few dont either) so unless there is a fix for this the workaround is to use the tray icon rather than the popup window. Again a fix would be nice.

Startup is via the registry so to stop it from starting you have to use msconfig. Maybe making it available under the Programs -> Startup Folder would make disabling or enabling on startup easier.

Overall it does the job....is there an updated version planned?

Of course I don't have Z520, I'm using the A150 so I have a N270 Diamondville. I downloaded the latest coretemp and the included readme file indicates it can only read temperature accurately with Core, Core solo, duo and quad processors.

you can disable it from startup by running msconfig in a command prompt and unchecking it under startup items

    Hi all
    Thanks for the app

BUGS: same blank squares here too ;)
I thinks a small and simple app gui is better than a skinable one with problems
but this my opinion not a rule LOL
in fact I think if you do a trayicon version only with a context menu do the job in a simple manner

about the startup off with msconfig, I prefer to use shortcut to a disable.reg with this
    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
and to enable it with this
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    Code:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "Acer Aspire One Fan Control"="X:\\Path\\AA1FanControl.exe"
About the app its a must for every xp aao user :)
    good job

When the fan control is disabled, I'm still getting 65-70C reading off Core Temp, that's after 2 hours of idling and the fan constantly blowing. In contrast, core temp shows 45-50C for my overclocked Core 2 Duo desktop cpu with stock heatsink. Although the heatsink on the Atom is much smaller, is this CPU that much hotter?

Speed fan doesn't actually read the CPU core temperature, instead it reads from the PECI, which require a offset to get the accurate reading. However, the temperature displayed on this fan control app seems to be in between core temp and speedfan's readings.

My fault! I thought the N270 is divided into different models - Z500 to Z540. But this is another kind of the atom. The information core temp gives are different. on there homepage http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/supportlist.html the atom is listed, in the readme it is not. how knows...

    @ ATLien

    you're right!

this could be but I'm not sure. I read that there are no changings due to the bios update...

    @ brachiopod

I know that I should be more carefully sometimes...

I m running the tool now for about a week.
In general I had no bigger problems, BUT:
    - the AAO becomes sometimes really hot, especially when it is busy (films etc.); as I know other laptops becoming hotter, I would say that the hardware should stand the temperature.
    - I would suggest to allow the tool run higher fan speeds (more configuring options), the low fan speed doesnt really cool it down, at least not when its very busy, for "normal" work its enough.
    - I dont really trust the indicated temperature - the AAO seems to be hotter (at least hotter than without the tool), so I always check the temp with my hand:)
    - in general the fan runs only the lowest speed (you can bearlely hear it). just very rarely it goes very shortly to the maximum speed - but not, when its hot:)
    - since I anstalled the tool, the left SD-card slot doesnt recognize cards anymore after pulling out a card! but I cannot be 100% sure that its this tool causing the problem (didnt deinstall it not yet)

but in general its a working tool without greater problems. when you use it only for low performances you could even turn the fan off. I didnt experience the other reported problems.
    :)
    martin
p.s.: and thanks again for the tool!

Hrhr.. never try to messure the temperature with your hand ;-) if it would really reach the critical junction temperature you would be screaming as hell :D .. Speedfan is telling me something about 42°C in Idle without Fan while the tool shows 53°C and also Notebook Hardware Control shows a lower temp and the fan-temperature is not always working correct, cpu was at 67°C in the tool, fan-temp at 55°C but the Fan was still not moving his ass.

One thing I've noticed is that the fan control only works when the inital temp is below the fan start temp. For example, if the current temp is 50C and the set point is 60C then the fan will kick on as planned at 60C, or if you change set point from 55C to 60C, as long as both set points are above the current temp. However if the current temp is 65C and you lower the set point from 70C to 60C the fan will not immediately kick on.

    Hi Ralph,

thanx for your work! I just got my A1 6 hours ago, and the fan was the one (and only) thing so far that could have made me regret it...

Nevertheless, I experience some of the problems already mentioned. Especially when reaching the max. temperature, the fan just speeds up very little - and it gets quite warm...

NB: my bios version is .3114

    Cheers, maetti

does anyone know wheather using this tool will damage the computer at all by letting it get hot and the fact that a lot of ppl say the fan only comes on with low rpm using this tool?

i have a 120gb xp version and the fan is not always on full but it is ALWAYS ON, and in a quiet room sounds loud.

i must stress however i DO love the Acer one even if the fan is dodgy!!!

I left my Aspire One on downloading for 7 hours with the control at 55 C, at the end of the sesh it was at 53 C and stable. Like other people's the fan seems to spin up to slower RPM when it does kick in ... I'm assuming it's throttled back so you don't experience a louder "whirr in/whirr out" when it's around your minimum specified temp.

Thanks Ralf for the software, I bought this device for a large part as a book reader and that fan was a dealkiller. My requests if you could be so kind have been put before but I'll list 'em :

    1. Keep in startup but option to disable/enable via shortcut
    2. Fan speed monitor next to CPU temp
    3. Option to manually throttle fan speed down/up

    Cheers

I confirm this information. Maybe a problem when you read the temperature of the CPU...
