Hey guys, I don't know if this is in the right section, but after powering down my Hackintosh, I had one of those power hangs but didn't realize it. Half an hour later, I take my AA1 out of its case, and it's really hot. So, I turned it off manually.

Now, whenever the computer is on, the fan runs really loudly. It has cooled down completely since the power hang, but the noisy fan persists. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

This morning, when I turned my Aspire One on, the fan started up very noisy for the first time. It is a constant buzzing hum. A wet finger, shows that the fan is running, but it doesn't seem to be putting out as much air flow as it did before. Does anyone have an idea?

I've backed up the PC, just in cases, as they say, but I've gotten so used to this thing, I don't want to lose the use of it for one day, let alone how many it would take if it goes down.

i've noticed that since i installed osx my fan runs 24/7 at the highest speed which puts off a rather loud noise. anyone know of a program that can control it. most programs i've seen for mac to control fans say the machine is not a supported one. any ideas?

Im in the same boat with you. I just dont leave my aao all day. only use it when i need it, then power it off.
I believe speedstep from iatkos v4i will help us, but i heard there might be some problems using it. I'll take a look at it again tomorrow.

I just realized exactly when the fan increased in noise... it was immediately after I downloaded and installed the updates, and rebooted the laptop.

So perhaps it was in the update we got?

    hi, noisy fan here too.

I don't think it's a matter of update, i'm running iatkos 5 with speedstep from iatkos v4, no updates (10.5.5)
On another post i ve read "Acer says that this is due to hdd overheating", maybe a fan replacement with a better one is the only solution

Sorry, I haven't been on for a while, been trying to work out how to do other things.

    The update I downloaded, was the update from the Live update, and included 180072, 180066, 180065, 180067, 180064, 180047, 180055, 180059, 190004, 180057, 180058, 180054, 180053, 180051, 180048, 180045. 180049 and 180061.

180054 - which is a patch for the system configuration, could have been what did it.

I don't know for sure of course.

In the mean time, I've been to Acer, sent them an email, and was told to call a toll number, 50 Pence per minute, as it was a software problem, and I would have to pay to get the problem fixed. Sorry, but the last time I got hooked into one of these, I spent 30 minutes on the phone, followed by another 30 minutes when that didn't work, and I can't exactly afford that.

I have also been to the Linpus website... and note that you cannot get anywhere on that site. Cannot download manuals, cannot register a user, cannot read the FAQ.... Perhaps I should have got a Dell...

Of course, it could be that it is nothing to do with software, and that there is something wrong with the fan. Reading some of the information out there, the blue AspireOne's may be prone to this, and I do have a blue one.

The only Speedstep kext I've had good luck with on 10.5.5 and 10.5.6 is Superhai's VoodooPower (http://www.superhai.com/darwin.html). Despite the name, I'm pretty sure it works with both vanilla and voodoo kernels.

OK, I've finally been able to download the acer_ec.pl and acerfand file, and install the application.

Problem solved. No more noisy fan.

I followed the instructions on http://n00.be/archives/758/

I've edited the acerfand file so that the fan goes off at 50 and on at 60, and it stays quite!

Didn't need to call the 50 pence per minute phone line, to correct the issue created by using liveupdate

I think whatotherway was using Linux ;)

I've posted the question on other forums (basically, if anyone knows how to modify the script for OS X) but it hasn't gotten any attention.

/dev/port must have an OS X equivalent...

I PM'd whatotherway and he confirmed that he is in fact using this on OS X. He's still using it and has modified the settings to his liking. I guess I'll give it a try soon. I'll report back with my results.

Well, I take it back. I followed up just to find which Install disc he had used and the OS X version. He replied he was running stock Linpus... Not what I was expecting! Back to the drawing board.

I'm using newest iDeneb and www.coolbook.se works fine. It's a tool to set clock and voltage (you have to pay 10$). I'm using my Acer now with 1.5ghz with lowest voltage (0.9 instead of 1.1). Works perfectly. Makes a difference of about 2-3 degrees and 3-5W power consumption.

Temperature never gets higher than 52°C. I stressed the CPU for about 30 minutes with "yes > /dev/null" in two terminals.

    Fan of course still noisy....
