    i tell you...jump. ;)
the Fan-Thing depends from user to user.
some are really annoyed by the sound of the fan, i'm not disturbed at all...make your choice to which side you'll belong ;-)

I just opened and am posting from my AA1 and it's super quiet - very, very quiet. It's actually quieter than anything I have with a fan in it. The Xbox, DVR, desktop and laptop are all louder. This thing is very quiet.

That really sucks that some people got a fudged fan!

I wonder if different devices make different noise or if all are the same and the different owners have different opinions about the noise of the fan.

I got my AO yesterday, at first I didn't hear it at all, but at night when everything is quiet I can hear the fan. It's running all the time. My other laptop is a Fujitsu-Siemens with Centrino, its fan is louder but does only run a few seconds every 20 minutes.

If I knew if there are really some Aspire One which are absolutely quiet I would return mine and buy another one until I get a quiet one.

Is here anyone who can compare two Aspire One and tell if they are the same?

I wanted to take it back today and the guy in the shop said this is normal and many customer returned it because of the noise.
I listened there another one and is the same. Must be faulty stock (Spain) or people with good/bad ear.

propably I'll get a second Aspire One tomorrow. I canceled my order at the first shop I ordered one because they had supply difficulties. It seems that they didn't consider my cancelation, I got an email that it's on its way.
I'll check the noise and report here if there are differences between the two devices, the louder one will find it's way back to its seller

I played with mine last night...the fan was noticeable but it was fine...until I attached my external monitor, then the fan would get very loud, then down to soft, then up to loud. I was going to use this comp as my main for awhile attached to my external but I dont think it can run it well with that loud fan noise. AND, my eyes this morning are a bit sore after being on that thing for an hour or so...don't know if I will end up keeping it because of the small screen...I thought it wouldnt' bother me but my eyes are a bit off today...we'll see.

I don't think that it is free, I have to check my credit card, I think they charged it.

But now the result of the comparison:
There really IS a difference between the fans, I would say that the second fan was !twice! as loud as the first.
So I'll keep my older one and return the newer one. I'm thinking about ordering a third one, maybe it would be more quiet than the first one

Now that I know that my Aspire One does not belong to the loud ones and that I have the faster SSD I'm happy with it.

    Slight grinding noise

When my aspire one is up and running the noise doesn't bother me much (maybe I have a quite one). However, during boot up, resume, and sometimes randomly while running there is a slight grinding noise. It is kind of like a candy wrapper being quietly balled up.

The noise itself doesn't bother me much, however, I worry that it is a sign of bad things to come. Do any other aspire one's make this noise? Is there reason to believe it is slowly grinding something down?

I didn't think much of it until I remembered that this computer has a silent SSD. I can't make my normal "that is just the hard drive" excuse.

Unless there are defective units, or there are two different lots of fans (as for the SSD). I can't understand all this discussion about fan noise.
As far as I can detect, it is less noisier than the Asus eeepc 701 fan (which was already acceptable for me). And the AAO is much quieter than anything else with a fan in it (except for equivalent UMPCs from other brands).

If you would like to reduce the noise at night (or when there is less background noise), just elevate the back of the AAO (as already stated in this thread).

I must say that it is the most silent computer device with a keyboard in it that I ever owned since my Sinclair Spectrum back in the 1983 (that had a 8bit Zilog Z80A at about 3 MHz inside), and that device was indeed fanless, although it would get much hotter than the AAO. I must also add that the CRT TV at that time would probably produce as much noise as the AAO... ;)

In any case, any other HDD laptop will produce more noise than the AAO (without HDD), as will most of the desktops (unless modified to be fanless).

I guess there are more significant issues to complain about the AAO. Although I must say that, fortunately, most of the things about AAO are positive!...
It is a great machine. I am very happy with my blue one, with a Samsung SSD, even if I have had to open it to reset the boot password to none (factory setting) and took the opportunity to add 1 GiB of RAM. I have been waiting for a machine like this for let's say 25 years! :D

The strongest items for me on the positive side for the SSD version of the AAO are the 2 card readers (should become standard in this segment) and the keyboard. The worst up until now is Acer's pour behavior about certain things, namely: GPL issues (no kernel source available so far, as far as I know); the SSD huge duality in write performances between the available models.
Also on the negative side, the battery should be at least rated 4400 mAh for its volume (or at least we should have a 4400 mAh of the same shape as an option; the Asus eeepc 701 battery appears to use roughly the same volume and is rated 4400 mAh).

no it's not. I have a 4 year old laptop (Fujitsu Siemens Amilo M7400 with 1,4Ghz Centrino), when it is running with the battery the fan is not working and the HDD is not as loud as my Aspire One. Only when I plug it in it makes more noise.

I don't understand why the fan has to run all the time

Well... I still think that there are more relevant things to discuss (unless there are really very noisy fans inside the AAOs from the people that are complaining; the one inside mine does little more than a whisper most of the time).

But just out of curiosity would your HDD also spin down in that mode? (If so, this is something that I really find very irritating for several reasons.)
Anyway, I am sure that the Centrino would not be at 1.4 GHz in that mode, and as far as I know the Atom may also have its frequency reduced (maybe they are limiting the reduction for performance reasons? or maybe the lack of heat pipes and heat sinks prevents the fan from completely switching off? I do not know.).
I didn't bother to look (because I am fine with it as it is), but possibly, if you would choose a more conservative energy mode, the AAO would also be able to switch the fan off. If the default software does not allow this, it shouldn't be that difficult to use custom software so solve this (if we want to keep using Acer's kernel maybe to have access to the sources would help a bit; otherwise, there are also generic FC8 kernels available, but I would prefer to keep the factory one for now).

If you really bought an AAO to have a fanless machine (at least when under-clocked), good luck with all this (maybe Acer will fix the software, or maybe someone else will write a patch for it if this is at all possible without damaging the ICs)! I have to confess that this was not my main objective, so, maybe I should not me writhing in this thread anymore (my main motive to start with was that this seems incredibly biased to me; reading certain posts would let us think that the AAO has an air plain turbine on it which IMO is far from the truth). Anyway, I am out of this discussion because people do have the right to have different expectations. My last advise is that each one should judge by himself/herself.

    --Edit --

P.S. - It seems that you just need to go to another thread to have an immediate solution (reduce the frequency to 800 MHz):

My first AAO had a somewhat noisy fan, which was not very audible in an office environment but in a quiet room it was annoying. Then after about a week the sound got much worse, with a vibration/grinding noise becoming apparent. I took it back to the store and had it replaced. The new one I got doesn't have that annoying grinding noise. The fan is very quiet and is very difficult to hear if I'm not in a perfectly quiet room. Even when the fan is spinning at max, the noise is a 'whoosh' sound I would expect from the airflow, and not the grinding noise. I'm very happy with my current AAO. I think the first one was just defective.

Just wondering... do your AA1s get quite warm after a few minutes as well? (even without Wifi and with only the mail client open)?

(I'm talking about the space to the left and right of the touchpad.)

    Send it back!!

    Intel SSD with 1.5GB RAM

I have Kubuntu running, with WiFi, FF3, Thunderbird and Viewing a movie and it gets a little warm, but not hot. And the fan is quiet, even with all that running. I do have the shite Intel SSD, so maybe that's the trade off?

I have the Samsung SSD and the noise just sucks. With WinXP installed, it kicks in after a minute or so and even goes to high level some minutes later - and never comes back down.
I am noise intolerant. But: You can hear it from 20 meters in a very quiet room - wtf.
Sad thing is: We ordered a second unit, same noisy behaviour. But after the Linpus usb stick update it seemed more quiet - I cannot check this any longer, this unit is sold now to sb else.
It is definitely not only air, it is a humming spin. Worse than older laptops with P3mobile.
I cannot return this unit, so I will have to find a solution: Software/Hardware fan throttle or/and metal cooler instead of this lousy fan.
