Ever heard of the PowerMac Cube G4? No fan in there, it's using convection to cool its innards (old machine I know, but a great piece of engineering nevertheless).

Back on topic : the fan in my One can't be said to be noisy. I can hear it when it's running at full speed, of course, but it's a soft noise and no "whinning" at all. It seems some units have a faulty fan or a less-than-perfect assembly.

Hell, I can"t even say which of my One or my Mac Mini is the "noisiest"... they're both so quiet... The One being closer to the ear, it's perceived as louder but I'm not sure it is.

    i purchased 2 acer one (1G, 120G HD, Win Xp for $399) from microcenter.com
first A1 produced "Fan noise" that was loud and very noticable. and it was *ON* 100% time draining battery
i also tested 2nd A1 and found out exact same issue with Fan and ended up returning both for refund.
after reading this fourm, it seem like it is "Hit or Miss".. now i am suspecting Acer's build quality

"does Atom have speed step?" or does it work at full blast all the time?

The CPU does get throttled down to 800 MHz, but that's irrelevant since the fan isn't placed over the CPU, if I'm not mistaken.

It's placed to blow air over a heatsink tray that covers the CPU and, I think, the GMA950 towards the vent next to the VGA socket.

But we've got a big thread going on in the parent forum on going fanless which has a lot more information. :)

    hi rachel,
I tried to read the thread but I gave up. I'm german and have problems in understanding everything and it's MUCH to read. I'm very interested in a solution to the noisy fan and happy that you and other user try to find one. Could you please just open a new thread if you get to a result so that noobs like me don't have to read through to whole thread understanding nothing? would be nice...

The solution has been found, just follow the instructions under "Simple fan control daemon" there : http://wiki.aspireone.net/index.php/How ... rol_daemon

(No, there's no XP implementation at this time, and I wouldn't know how to begin to make one.)

Thanks. The guide says I have to open a terminal in the directory where i saved the scripts. How do I do this. I have tried to read about terminals online, but I don't understand much.

How do I "Execute these lines in a terminal in the directory you downloaded the above scripts"

I have downloaded the scripts to /home/morten/Dokumenter/Fan

Really nice if I could get some helpful pointers here, this fan is killing me ;-)

Ok, I managed to work this out by myself, and the fan is now off. But will the fan automaticly go on when the computer is too hot, or is it shut down for good? I dont want my computer to start burning or something!

How can I controll the fan?

I have both the Linux 8GB SSD model and the 120GB HDD Win XP model. The fan on the 8GB is extremely noisy. However, the fan on the XP version is very quiet, even when running at full speed. I am not sure if Acer is sourcing their fans from different manufacturers or not, but the difference in noise level between the two is huge. I am guessing that it is more of just a hit or miss thing. At this price point, I'm sure the oem fans are probably not of the highest quality.

Purchased 2 AAOs at Best Buy last Sunday with XP/120GB/1GB. Both have absolutely no problems with fan noise or intermittent wifi darkness. Either they changed the fan manufacturers or we might have an updated BIOS? Either way, nothing to complain about except the button layout on the touchpad.
