I would be hesitant to do that.

After doing a couple other mods, I've gotten my general usage temps with no fan on down to 50-52C so I'm satisfied. I've set the fan to only kick in @ 55C which only happens under load or multitasking. I've checked the fan resistor idea. I would do it except I don't have any ceramic resistors that are low enough or small enough. If anyone does this, please do use ceramic (these have a stony/grainy feel to them) since ordinary resistors (smooth) tend to heat up a lot and there's enough heat inside the chassis as is.

The Acer Won't Boot w/o Fan.
And i think the reason you can do that on the EEE is bc its a 900 mhz cpu ?
Unless you have the Atom Version with 8.9 screen.

I'm sure you could use a resistor of some sort to trick it...and run the aao without the fan being plugged in.

I'm a newb, but not a complete one. But The fan on this AAO was driving me INSANE. After 2 weeks of owning it, it's never shuts off.
So firstly, massive thanks to Rachel and her peers, and also for hosting the files.
Big thanks to here: http://n00.be/archives/758/ and the guy in this thread that posted it.

For the 'newbs' that come here, and as not many people seem keen on answering them but rather chat to each other ignoring us - here's a walk through to installing this script to make the damn fan quit it's bellowing.

    Download acerfand: http://electronpusher.org/~rachel/acerfand
    Download acer_ec.pl http://aceracpi.googlecode.com/svn/trun ... acer_ec.pl
Save each one into your downloads folder (right click, and chose Save Link As)

Now, ALT +F2 to bring up a Terminal window. Click run.
Type su - and your password when prompted.

    Now type cp /home/user/Downloads/acerfand /usr/local/bin
    Now type cp /home/user/Downloads/acer_ec.pl /usr/local/bin
This will move the two files from your Downloads folder into the correct folder (that you'll struggle to do if you try to just drag and drop).
Next, in Terminal still, type chmod 755 /usr/local/bin/acerfand

Now (in Terminal) type sudo mousepad /etc/rc.local
A new screen will open up.
Simply add /usr/local/bin/acerfand at the end of the file, then go to File then Save then close it down.
    Reboot your Acer.

Before the desktop comes up, you should hear your fan stop.

Please, if anyone spots any mistakes can you fix them rather than take the p***. :)
And if anyone thought I did a decent job for a newb, can you spare 5 mins to do the same when a newb pops up? We all start somewhere you know.

    Thanks.

    ~K

It's actually not the Atom processor that needs the fan - it only dissapates a little over a watt, and passive cooling is completely adequate for that. It's the support chips ("SouthBridge" in particular, in this case) that are worse - about 3 watts, and especially the graphics processor at about 5-6 watts. The Atom's on-chip temperature sensor in theory won't protect these other chips, but because in practice they're all on the same heatsink structure, it probably would shut the machine down in time to prevent their destruction. Stillo, I wouldn't run the machine without the fan.

In my case it's a non-issue, because the fan is virtually silent. I read about the fan noise complaints, but got the unit anyway and the fan is at least as quiet, and I think quieter ([sic]) than my Asus Eee...

Has anyone tried undervolting the processor? Did that help? I am using the acerfand, and it turns it off most of the time, but if I am doing something a bit intensive, like even browsing youtube, the fan comes on, not too loud, but something more intense it will.

I tried this tool too. But my AcerOne 150 Bios 3.305 shut itself down several times.
First I thought it might be caused by overheating protection by BIOS.
But now I think, it happend when the acerfand switches from off to on.
    Someone also have this problem?

Where can I find the messages posted by the tool? May be the bios will not recognised right.
In the source I can see somewhat like a logger.

    Thanks for posting that, Krog.

Another question has popped up for me re: fan control. I am happy to say I FINALLY got it to work on my aao. I don't know what I did differently this time that made it work, but I'll take it. I also used the instructions on the Ubuntu wiki. On that wiki is a note that says:
Since this is the model I have, and I don't want to damage my system, I'd like to check that the script is returning the correct values. But how do I do that? Instructions along the line of Krog's helpful post would be most appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

After a few tries, I was able to do the fan-hack by software on my brand new Linux AA1 (120GB). To be on the save side i set my temperatures on 53 and 63 degrees. I thought i would be able to change this afterwards. Now everything is functional I would like to change these values to 55 and 65 . With my settings the fan keeps running for a long time, It finally stops but it takes a while. When i try to edit the file it refuses to save.
Doe someone have an idea why, and how to change the values?
Please explain to this Linux newbie.

    Thanks
    Wim

When I had this problem with a file it was because I didn't have permission to change the file as user. When I opened a terminal and entered

    Code:
    sudo gedit /filedirectory/filename
it asked for my password and then let me edit and save the file. gedit is the name of my text editor; yours may be different.

Just thought I'd share my experience in case it helps. :)

It would be nice to have a summary of the success story and "how to" e.g. on the 1st page by those who succeeded. Otherwise Its very hard to read through all 34 pages of posts. Thanks

Hi, I bet there are lots of linux newbies here that really need to do this fan noise hack but cant, including me, the part to get to the terminal window is easy, but how do we copy the scripts , and how do we copy them where they should, and how do we make them executable, pleeeaaase could somebody post a very simple step to step guide to do this, cause the fan noise is driving me up the wall, i searched the internet but didnt find a really dummy-proof guide.Hey Rachel :geek: , since you developed this hack you could probably help us beginners too.

in a word no , for about 2-3 hours the laptop would rn happily without the fan but take a look at www.mini-itx.com there atom boards have huge heatsinks and some them even need fans still , basicly i would just pull the rotr of the fan so theers nothing spinning but it still registers a fan present and id add loadsa fins to the "passage way" between the fan and the grill to take down the tempreture without the fans assistance , or you could do the obvious thing and upgrade to the 04 bios which fixes the noisy fan problems.

    Hi!

    I followed these instructions,

    http://jorge.ulver.no/2008/08/06/acer-a ... hefanspeed

and i thing the AAO gets rather warm, it seems that the fan is never working, i also tried to change the values in the acerfand.conf file.

How can I restore the default settings?

    thanks!

    Hi,

I have an aspire one a100L (z5g model), 1 gig RAM, 16 GB SSD, 3G built-in. I have the original Linpus Lite installation.

I implemented the noisy fan fix as on this page http://n00.be/archives/758/

This was a big mistake!!! When I rebooted I only got a blank screen, with the fan wizzing very loud for a bit then stopping.

Caps lock keys still work, but nothing else (I tried alt+f2 but no console). At least I could shut down by hitting power button though.

This got me worried so I booted up my live USB install of Ubunto and found /etc/rc.local on the SSD. I used sudo vi /etc/rc.local and undid the line I was told to add.

However I still can't boot into Linpus. Still get the black screen, but the fan is back to normal. But even worse now, the only way I can shut down is to take the battery out.

    Any help is much appreciated!

    Regards,
    Gary.
