    Hi!

I have in my AAO WXP installed. But I was thinking that would be great to have a mini-OS in what I can surf the net and another basic things. Because, sometimes it's tiring to wait for WXP to see a web. It's possible to do that? which OS? and how to install it?.

Thank you, I have searched about it; so I hope this wouldn't be repeated

There are a couple of Linux operating systems that would be fast on the Aspire One but the only thing that I'm not too sure about is the drivers. They are not a problem for any Windows operating system but for Linux...

I wouldn't really recommend Linpus Linux Lite - the Linux that comes with the Linux Aspire One's because it's not really `Lite`. The ISO is even BIGGER than Windows XP

It takes about 25 seconds to boot up
40 seconds for the wireless to switch on
    A minute to start surfing...

It's also kind of sluggish (even with 1 GB RAM & HDD), that's why I went back to good `auld` Windows!

Yeah... linpus is not what I was looking for ;). But yeah.. I haven't thought about the drivers...it's going to be dificult then...

But I wanted to say, something that boots on in 10 secs...and it haves basic things to see on internet. And that it takes on hdd no more than 300 or 400MB. I don't know if that exists... but I have seen that in the new Sony P-Vaio; the super small laptop; they have a system that let you choose what you want to load...if XP or the mini interface to surf and all of that things....it's too interesting!

You could try hibernating or standby your AAO in windows xp instead of shutting it down. Standby to displaying webpage takes me less than 3 seconds and hibernate to displaying webpage takes under 10 seconds.

A xp installation could be slimed down to about 400mb installation which fits your description.

You realise of course that the .iso includes the complete open office suite ;) ? As well as a lot of bloated extra programs - which indeed is silly.

As for the question in the OP: a lot of modern motherboards in fact have a built-in linux version to do exactly what you describe - being able to boot quickly into a micro-OS to just surf a bit. But making those work on the One could be challenging. http://www.splashtop.com/ is an example that may be useful though.

Otherwise you could try Damn Small Linux and/or Puppy ?

Have you tried the XP hibernation mode instead of turning it off and rebooting? Set your machine to hibernate on all actions. Mine takes 14 seconds to hibernate, 22 seconds to boot up (but 9 seconds of the boot up is at the BIOS screen, you probably will have that 9 second delay with any OS). Hibernation uses no battery power of course. That's pretty close to your desired 10 second boot up time.

This hardly qualifies as a "mini-OS". What the developers never mention is that you need 5-6 Gb to install this!
